Data engineering is on the brink of a radical evolution. And AI is rewriting the rules. Over the past decade, cloud adoption and the rise of analytics engineering have reshaped the field. But AI will completely redefine it. And for data engineers, the work ahead is exciting. Routine tasks will be shrunk to minutes, freeing up time to focus on building the AI systems of tomorrow. So what does that mean for data practitioners? It will push them in one of three new directions. Learn more about how AI will disrupt data engineering and what teams need to do to stay ahead in “How AI will disrupt data engineering as we know it” (link in comments) from Tristan Handy.

  • Some tools help you work. Others change your career. For many, dbt was the moment everything clicked—when SQL turned into software engineering, when analytics became about building reliable systems, when the data team finally had a shared language. Four data leaders share how dbt shaped their paths: 🔹 Naomi Johnson went from using dbt at a consultancy to leading an entire data platform team. 🔹 Katie Claiborne transformed from a SQL slinger to a software-savvy analytics engineer. 🔹 Valentinas Mitalauskas started in marketing—now he leads engineers. 🔹 Pip Sidaway found a global community of like-minded data practitioners. How has dbt impacted you? Let’s hear it ⬇️

  • 🏎️ Is your data team a $100,000 F1 racing crew? Or a $20 tire change at the local car shop? The answer to that question may determine how you set expectations with your internal data stakeholders. Wade Wachs, Director of Analytics at Liquid Web, shares how he mentors his data teams to handle stress, deadlines, and the occasional unreasonable(?) request. 😅 Catch the full episode of Data Career Transformations, our weekly show where Bolaji Oyejide 🔥🎙 sits down with data leaders to explore career growth, leadership, and the evolving world of analytics. • 🧡 Employee Spotlight: Andrea Adu 🧡 We believe that when employees are supported—at work and beyond—they can do their best work. Andrea Adu, Senior Benefits Analyst, shares how dbt Labs fosters flexibility, collaboration, and continuous learning in her role. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗯𝘁 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝘀? One of the things I appreciate most about dbt Labs is the flexibility, which has been invaluable as a working parent. Whether it’s adjusting my schedule for a sick toddler, handling unexpected snow days, or stepping away for a parent-teacher conference, I’ve never had to choose between being present for my family and being successful at work. The trust and understanding from leadership make a huge difference, allowing me to manage my responsibilities on my own schedule. Knowing I can take care of my family while still having a meaningful career makes dbt Labs a truly supportive workplace. I also love the impact-driven nature of my work—knowing the programs I help manage directly contribute to employees’ well-being makes my role incredibly rewarding. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗯𝘁 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲𝘀?  Cross-functional collaboration (especially in a remote environment!) is a defining aspect of our culture. In the benefits space, I work closely with Payroll, Finance, People Operations, and external vendors to ensure smooth program execution. There’s a strong culture of knowledge-sharing and problem-solving, making even complex projects more manageable. The company encourages a growth mindset, and leadership is pretty receptive to ideas that improve processes. I appreciate that I can shape my role, take ownership of initiatives, and continuously learn through doing. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲?  One of the most valuable career development opportunities I’ve had at dbt Labs is the ability to learn on the job with the support of great managers. I’ve taken on new challenges, broadened my skill set, and gained exposure to areas beyond my core role—particularly in compensation. The company encourages growth by allowing employees to step into new projects, problem-solve in real time, and apply what they’re learning immediately. Additionally, taking a compensation class has provided a structured foundation in an area I’m eager to develop. Having managers who support hands-on learning, provide guidance, and trust me to take ownership has been instrumental in my growth. It’s empowering to be in an environment where growth isn’t just encouraged—it’s actively supported. Want to work alongside Andrea and the rest of our team? • dbt Developer Day is coming up, and we’ve got a lot to show you. Elias DeFaria—one of the co-founders of SDF and now a product manager at dbt Labs—shares what he’s excited about: 🛠 SQL, but smarter – real-time error feedback as you type ⚡️ Lightning-fast development – say goodbye to slow parse times 🤖 AI-powered workflows – less manual work, more impact He’s teaming up with Grace Goheen, Jeremy Cohen, and Alexis Jones to walk through what’s next for dbt developers—and how these updates will make building in dbt smoother and faster than ever. If dbt is part of your daily workflow, this is one to watch. 📅 Join us on March 19th & 20th → https://bit.ly/3F4sKow

  • Data costs add up fast. dbt helps you take control. Data leaders from Symend, Siemens, DPG Media IT, ClickUp, and Lyst share how dbt has helped them: 🔹 Cut compute and operating costs by as much as 90%—while transforming data more frequently 🔹 Pinpoint cost drivers with granular model-level insights and full visibility into query performance 🔹 Centralize metadata to see where spend is going and optimize performance With visibility into every query, table, and dependency, teams can spend smarter—not just spend less.

  • Remember how dbt felt when you had a small project? You pressed enter and stuff just happened immediately? We're bringing that back. That pause between pressing enter on a dbt run and seeing a model start to build—that’s dbt’s parsing phase. As projects grow, so does parse time. Read the blog (link in comments) to get a sneak peek at the new dbt engine's Rust-backed 🦀 performance increases. ⚡️ It’s just faster. Period.
