Last month at #Coalesce2024, we dove into what One dbt can mean for expanding access to data. We're excited to see our partner Hex take this vision further with their release of Explore tiles. Now, business users can build analytic views of data, all while utilizing trusted metrics shared from the dbt Semantic layer. Take a closer look at what Hex has rolled out: https://lnkd.in/eJhKtvCX

Before 2022, Flybuys—one of Australia’s biggest rewards programs—had four data teams, each with its own approach. The result? Redundancy, inconsistency, and systems that were tough to navigate. For data analysts, this setup meant relying on data engineers for new products instead of self-serving, which slowed down innovation. To change this, Flybuys’ Lead Enterprise Data Architect Milos Zikic and his team assessed two options: self-hosting dbt Core or moving to dbt Cloud. Their analysis showed that with dbt Cloud, everything from testing to version control and documentation came in one package—plus, it promised a 192% ROI. The impact was big: each analyst saved 143.6 hours annually (that’s 17 days), while engineers gained back 152.6 hours. 🤯 Two years in, dbt Cloud powers Flybuys’ production-grade data transformations, streamlining operations across the board. Read more about their journey in the blog post (link in comments).

Julia Schottenstein left dbt Labs and The Analytics Engineering Podcast to become an early employee at LangChain. Now she’s back as a guest on the show she once cohosted 🎧 Julia and Tristan Handy discuss the current state of the AI ecosystem and the parallels between dbt and LangChain. “I often think about LangChain as the dbt for AI,” Tristan said. “With dbt, we said there's this fundamentally new compute construct—the cloud data platform—and it needs a programming framework on top of it to enable users to do the things that they want to do. I think LangChain came out of that same kind of need.” Listen to their full conversation here https://lnkd.in/e4XutTPR or wherever you get your podcasts.

From SQL chaos to streamlined success—here’s how WHOOP transformed its data game 📊 When wearable tech company WHOOP started, their data processes were built on ad hoc SQL scripts, with no central orchestration or visibility into how data was created. Without clear success metrics, the team needed a solution. Enter dbt Core—a free, SQL-friendly tool that helped streamline their workflows. However, dbt Core alone didn’t provide a centralized service, leading to issues like duplicate models and a lack of visibility across analysts' work. Additionally, external tools were still required for scheduling and orchestration. To address this, WHOOP shifted to dbt Cloud, integrating CI/CD and dev/test processes, while enabling new use cases and smoother onboarding for analysts. The move unlocked greater collaboration and efficiency across the team. Matt Luzzi, WHOOP’s Director of Analytics, is now looking ahead to AI opportunities with dbt Semantic Layer: “I foresee dbt being a huge player in AI and natural language chatbots. By thoughtfully designing the semantics of these models in a machine-readable way, we’re setting the stage for meaningful data conversations powered by AI.” For more insights, check out the blog post by Sara Gawlinski (link in comments).
