As an active web3 venture investor, we are constantly evaluating onchain metrics to assess the health and durability of a protocol’s adoption. With any emerging technology, new frameworks and new metrics must be created to understand the emerging usage and potential use cases. The latest Coinbase research suggests the h-index, which balances activity growth with diversity. The h-index serves as a strong early indicator for widespread adoption in the absence of relevant lagging TVL-based ( Total Value Locked) metrics. Sustained h-index levels may also suggest a more resilient community during market downturns and as trading markets gain market efficiency a leading indicator to price changes. Their research focuses on applying this metric to related blockchains on Ethereum and suggests that the broadest onchain healthy adoption is currently occurring on Base.
