Research and Data Collection
About us
As a small, African American-owned business leading the design and implementation of research and evaluation studies since 1984, DIR is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. By incorporating culturally responsive practices which identify and include both traditional and innovative methods, DIR offers unique perspectives and approaches that have proven effective in conducting research and evaluation, including primary data collection, with diverse populations and organizations. We have deep experience in formative and summative evaluation approaches, employing the latest qualitative and quantitative analysis methods. We also provide technical assistance to enhance the capabilities of program providers to collect and use data for performance measurement, program planning, and outcome analysis. DIR collects data through surveys, school and classroom observations, student assessments, qualitative in-depth interviewing, and focus groups. We operate a computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) center capable of handling large-volume surveys. We also maintain a nationwide roster of skilled multilingual staff for both field and telephone data collection. Our techniques and staff produce high response rates from diverse and difficult-to-reach populations. Such high response rates on topics in fields as varied as education, employment, teen pregnancy prevention, housing, diversity and climate, and client satisfaction facilitate accurate program assessment and planning. We use multiple platforms for web-based surveys tailored to our clients’ needs. Data files are designed and delivered to meet the unique specifications of each client. Our permanent staff of Ph.D. and master’s level researchers, analysts, project directors, and program specialists are enhanced by our network of nationally recognized subject matter experts engaged in specialized projects. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, we also maintain permanent offices in Rockville, Maryland (near DC).

I was present for this historic gift announced today at the National Medical Association convention! As the evaluation partner for the Greenwood Iniative, DIR has been conducting a longitudinal evaluation of the initial $100M investment. And during the announcement, Mr. Bloomberg shared his foundation's motto - In God We Trust! Everyone else, bring data! We are thrilled for the institutions and medical community! We are equally thrilled at Bloomberg Philanthropies' commitment to using data to make informed and equitable decisions, and this one, will be critical in achieving health equity, and thus health justice, for generations of communities!
JUST ANNOUNCED: We’re committing $600M to the country’s four historically Black medical schools: Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, and Morehouse School of Medicine. We will also provide a grant for the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine, in development now. This investment is part of our Greenwood Initiative, which seeks to advance racial wealth equity by addressing systemic underinvestment in Black institutions and communities. Increasing these schools’ endowments will strengthen their financial stability and institutional capacity to respond to the rising costs of tuition, innovative research, and operations. https://lnkd.in/euDDW_mq

Being in community with philanthropy has indeed been energizing! #GEO2024 is pushing this community to rethink their power and the responsibility that comes along with it! #ALOK, today's keynote speaker, combined comedy, humility, art, trauma, beauty, and hope, to inspire and challenge us. I accept it! #DIR accepts it! As a first time attendee, I appreciate and applaud the intentional focus on learning (evaluation) and action. Researchers can get stuck in analysis paralysis - but so many non-researchers can too. When I get stuck, I have to ask myself if am stuck out of fear of making the wrong decision, or do I really not have enough information (data) to make an informed and equitable decision. How do you get out of analysis paralysis? How do you keep yourself accountable for decisions that are yours to make? Let's grow together!
We’re energized after our opening plenary with insights, reflections and action! Next up are our breakout sessions. #GE02024.

It has been a privilege to travel with #DIR staff over the last week. First, I joined the Project CHANGE team in San Diego for the annual #Lucin meeting, learning about progress towards a cure for lupus - Cynthia, Ventrice, Oriana, Tiara! Then on to Atlanta for #AAPOR2024 with Heather, Lenin, Krishna, Nicole, and Jackie! These are opportunities for learning, growth, and being in community with my people! Meanwhile on the west coast, David, Elenne, Chad, and Maria are training DIR's newest staff members for an upcoming project! The pandemic halted work in the field, but it's slowly coming back! I appreciate the opportunity to see my team represent DIR!
