The days of hoovering up copyrighted data to train your models seem to be coming to an end. OpenAI struck deals with Reddit and News Corp earlier this year. Now Lionsgate has signed a huge deal with Runway. If you train your AI models using copyrighted data you aren't paying for, you will eventually be sued. My advice to other AI entrepreneurs out there is to consider hiring a data licensing team to stay in the clear, or build with owned data (the long play). There’s already legislation like the NO FAKES Act (which will be back) and the Generative AI Copyright Disclosure Act. I believe more of these regulations are coming and companies who aren't compliant are going to damage enterprise value.

Online fraud is up 20% this year, with stolen and synthetic fraud representing 85% of all cases: 👉 A rideshare mafioso used fake documents to rent Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash accounts to undocumented workers, amassing almost $800k before getting caught 👉 Airbnb last year deleted 59K fake listings and stopped 157K from joining the app, even incorporating AI to bolster the verification process. 👉 There were more than 64K dating app scams in the US last year, with total losses reaching $1.14B Does singling out synthetic accounts require a massive chunk of real-time identity intelligence? Yes. Is accessing this much data even possible? Also yes. Learn how: https://lnkd.in/gH-75vZ4

Building a successful AI company demands the right data foundation. The question is: does the data you need already exist, or do you have to generate it? If it exists, who owns it? Is it scalable? What does it take to get to sufficiency? Is it rare or commodity (i.e easily scraped) Relying on a single data source is risky; working with competing data providers risks dilution and potentially efficacy. It’s certainly not easy... If you are an AI founder or early employee, your bet is really on data. The AI "winners" will be the companies who got their data foundations right from the start.

Last night’s #debate brought up (many) interesting topics in our household. One of which was about how #AI might influence this election cycle. While it’s unclear if the growing influence of AI will sway the main event in November, its impact will certainly be felt in smaller, more regional races. With human-like bots influencing social media conversations and AI’s increasingly sophisticated ability to generate super realistic images and soundbites, it could be a game-changer in tightly contested elections. The importance of knowing whether someone is real, or just a mask for a different biased party is imperative when it comes to deciding who we trust and what we believe online. Elections aren’t just tied to “winning” a position, they have massive financial and societal implications. Despite a growing lack of trust in social media, the opinions of our peers still matter, especially for voters who are on the fence. If our “peers” are nefarious actors who can influence on a massive scale, that’s a huge problem. The role of AI in politics is just beginning, but the challenges we're already seeing underscore the importance of stricter AI policy. We need transparency when it comes to deepfakes - ultimately, we MUST use this technology to help society, our businesses, and especially our young people, know what is real, and what’s entirely fake out there. #GenAI #Fraud #PresidentialDebate
