About us
Deep Roots is an actively anti-racist and inclusive organization. We serve all students, support all families, and advocate for our communities. Our learners and team will discover their purpose, potential and actively work to dismantle barriers within and beyond our walls. We are the first charter school in Philadelphia to be approved in 10 years, and we are located in the Kensington catchment community. Practice because each and every individual in our school community, from student to leadership, will engage in deliberate practice, and value this as the path to excellence. Service because our service-learning model will be discipline based; it will require students to have a presence in the community, and reflect on their experiences regularly. Purpose because we want to empower our students to uncover their unique gifts and talents, and apply them towards an outward purpose about which they are passionate. The focus of our DRCS community is college preparatory, preparing students for success at a selective institution. The driving force in our community is world class teaching in every classroom. We will be utilizing the extended school day and extended school year. We opened for the 2018-2019 school year in the Kensington catchment neighborhoods of Philadelphia. Deep Roots Charter School is on a mission to strengthen school culture. Today we shared results of the employee feedback survey with the goal of creating a space for employees to discuss the results and give more feedback on ways to continue to build a positive workplace. Employees were: ➡️Skeptical in the beginning to share feedback and then publicly questioned the safety of the space ➡️Engaged in conversation about what’s working well and what’s not ➡️Courageously sharing their experiences - the good and the bad ➡️Describing very practical leadership actions that would improve their experience ➡️Enjoying the space with one another! Leaders were: ➡️Skeptical in the beginning about how this session would go - it’s hard getting a lot of feedback at once! ➡️Listening ➡️Circling the room and silently encouraging conversation/feedback ➡️Affirming Before leaving, I reassured the team that we just witnessed a bunch of green flags (and how fitting given that everything in the school is green lol) 💚We were able to publicly reassure all employees that giving feedback is okay and they trusted us and went alllll in! 💚The school leader was literally a walking display of what it means to be vulnerable in leadership — that creates more trust 💚Employees were loving on each other and the leadership team while sharing some pretty big challenges — ummm, yes!!! 💚Employees demonstrated so much care for their community and a commitment to making their workplace even better 💚Leaders acknowledged that there’s more work to do, and they’re ready to lead the way! (This is what it looks like to build psychological safety at work) Kudos to this whole team for creating space for these discussions. This IS the work! ❤️ #workplaceculture #leadership #engagement #feedback #psychologicalsafety
