Help is on the way!!! Stress and loneliness is at epidemic levels, but new programs are rolling out. As many at 65% of parents are in a state of overwhelming stress. We can’t be well when our kids aren’t well. And it is obviously not just parents, the truth is the surgeon general may need to declare being a human today is hazardous to your health. But help is on the way. Plans are unfolding quickly that will connect our digital world with truly effective care. See the proposed new reimbursement codes for doctors to administer in person and digital mental health treatments, coming online in 2025. Regulations are coming to tame some of the most exploitative behaviors and practices that are holding us back as a society. Note the work the Surgeon General, the FDA and the FTC is doing to sort out what media can help us and what media can hurt us. And new knowledge bases are being developed to help people understand what they can do to tackle the stress they are living under. In the meantime, hold on to one and other. Community is everything. Reach out, accept help, be a neighbor and be a friend. If you can’t find that in person community, find a safe space online. Play with good people, get to know them, share with them. New research shows video games improve mental health, but how and even what console you play on matters! This novel study looked at the overall mental health of folks who had access to video game systems verses those who didn't during the pandemic. The study found that playing up to three hours per day resulted in improved mental health. More than that showed diminished returns, though extended play never reached a point of mental or physical harm (unless playing was an avoidance behavior) There were many variables that made a certain game best for you and it appears that even the console selected could lead to better outcomes. There is still time to have influence on what DTx will be covered by insurance. For the first time, CMS’s proposed physician fee schedule, a comprehensive annual listing of the fees that Medicare uses to pay doctors, now includes digital therapeutics. The proposal does not cover all digital therapeutics under multiple benefit categories, as the Digital Therapeutics Alliance (DTA) had asked nearly a year ago. Rather, the proposal includes three codes for FDA-cleared “digital mental health treatment devices.” The proposal is open to comment through Sept. 9; the final rule will be issued by the end of the year. Time to jump in and help set the rules for how reimbursement will reach the makers of Immersive Medicine. Out of 350,000 health and wellness apps, only 20 have been FDA cleared as Digital Therapeutics. Here an app, there an app, everywhere a wellness app… As reported in Nature Magazine, Apple and Google dominate the provision of apps through the ‘Apple App Store’ and the ‘Google Play Store’ respectively, accounting for around 92% of the mobile app distribution business. The number of health and wellness apps available in the app store has been estimated at 350,000 apps worldwide with as many as 90,000 new health apps added in 2020 alone. The FDA emergency order allowed a lot of leeway in what could be marketed as a digital therapeutic, but that time has passed. We are now seeing a major divide between the DTx cleared by the agency and the vast array of health apps and games available on these major stores. Typically there is no doctor support or reimbursement for medical products that are not cleared, a reality that greatly impacts accessibility of care.
