We're are excited to announce the launch of our newest chapter: Defy Utah! Defy Utah will be kicking off our first cohort later this October at the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City, offering our CEO of Your New Life program to currently incarcerated individuals, or as we call them, Entrepreneurs in Training (EITs). The entrepreneurial spirit is strong here in Utah, making it the perfect place to leverage entrepreneurship for a second chance at life to a new group of EITs who are hungry for change! We are also welcoming John Jackson as the Executive Director leading the Defy Utah chapter! 🤝🌟 In his own words, John describes this as: "a full-circle moment for me. In 2017, fifteen years into my prison sentence, I enrolled in Defy. Through Defy's EIT program, I learned that my natural-born hustling skills could be transformed to create positive change in the world!" #Defytheodds #Entrepreneurship #Reentryprograms #Utah #newchapter

Defy Ventures CEO Andrew Glazier was at #CGI2024 this week making a commitment to dramatically expand our work across the country. Defy Ventures is joining Clinton Global Initiative's movement to accelerate change. Will you join us?!
This week at #CGI2024, I was honored to represent Defy Ventures and join a community of people and organizations that are making a difference in the lives of millions of people across the world. At this year's Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, we launched a Commitment to Action to build economic opportunity for people returning home from incarceration. Specifically, we are looking to TRIPLE our impact over the next 5 years - this means we'll be working to grow our work in the 9 states where we already operate and expand our work to new states. I'm excited to be embarking on this effort to fulfill our mission to shift mindsets to give people with criminal histories their best shot at a second chance on a new scale. If you've joined us before for Defy Ventures events, you know the power of what we do - please keep supporting our work and tell a friend. If you haven't yet seen it and are ready to join us, let me know! With the support of the Defy community, by 2030, we can exceed our goal to bring our entrepreneurship, career readiness, well-being, and personal development programs to nearly five thousand currently and formerly incarcerated individuals across the country every year as they seek to Defy the Odds!

In America, the unfortunate reality is that a revolving door to prison exists, which leaves a legacy of poverty, dependency, violence and incarceration. At Tullman Community Ventures, we believe every individual deserves a second chance in life. After a person serves their time, we think society should do its upmost to give each formerly incarcerated individual the best shot at a safe, healthy and successful life. If this doesn’t move you, consider the following data: Statistics show that children of prisoners are 6X more likely than other children to be incarcerated at some point in their lives. This is a terrible inheritance passed down to future generations. At TCV, we partner with Defy Ventures because we believe in their model of leveraging entrepreneurship to increase economic opportunities & transform lives for the 7 million Americans in our prisons, on probation, or on parole. But don’t take our word for it: Defy maintains a less than 10% recidivism rate for program graduates. That’s HUGE! In 2024, our support helped Defy launch new in-prison cohorts of its reentry program and provide post-release reentry services for people rebuilding their futures. We are proud of our partnership with Defy and hope to continue to help unlock opportunities for many Americans in the future.

Powerful insights on the impact of second chances from Quan Huynh, Executive Director of our Defy SoCal chapter
The school-to-prison pipeline is a complex and damaging system that disproportionately affects marginalized communities, particularly people of color. On today's episode of the Future of Work Podcast, Quan Huynh, Executive Director of Southern California at Defy Ventures, joins us to discuss this and much more! Quan exemplifies the power of second chances. While in prison, he discovered his entrepreneurial spirit and started Jade Janitors after his release from a 22-year prison sentence in 2015. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the graduation for the 2023 Checkr, Inc. Apprenticeship Program. This rigorous, 12-month paid apprenticeship program was specifically designed for formerly incarcerated individuals to gain the skills they needed to be successful at a growing tech company like Checkr. I was particularly proud to see two Defy Ventures graduates successfully complete the program: Adam Garcia and Daniel Darling. Adam and Daniel show us all firsthand that when justice-involved people are recognized for the talents they have and given an opportunity to succeed, they set an example for everyone. Congratulations to these two and all the graduating apprentices on their success. Congratulations also and thanks to Ken O. and Christina Louie Dyer for having the vision and energy to build a program like this, and to the leadership at Checkr (talking about you Daniel Yanisse) for walking their talk. Paid apprenticeship programs are among the best ways to establish Fair Chance hiring programs and Checker is showing how it can be done. I'm proud to have Checkr as partners in our work and look forward to your next apprenticeship cohort (and helping to source more amazing Defy program alumni candidates for you)!
