For the City of Seattle, a local, beloved produce market is once again open after a devastating fire in February of this year. In the immediate aftermath of the fire, Degenkolb Engineers evaluated the building to assess the damage and engineer the repairs. By working with Elevated Restoration Services and the City of Seattle to get the repair design through permitting as quickly as possible, the team came together to bring this market back to life so it could reopen to the community. #firedamage #rebuilding #structuralengineering #seattle

Ahead of today's International ShakeOut Day, Jack Wegleitner, Project Engineer at Degenkolb's San Francisco office and co-chair of SEAONC’s Disaster Emergency Services Committee, planned and emceed SEAONC’s monthly meeting commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake. Learn more about the event and how you can prepare for the next Big One below. Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC) #EarthquakePreparedness #LomaPrieta #GreatShakeOut

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟯𝟱 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗺𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗮 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗸𝗲 On Tuesday, October 1, SEAONC’s monthly association meeting commemorated the 35th Anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake, which struck the Bay Area on October 17, 1989. The meeting’s program was thoughtfully planned by the SEAONC Disaster Emergency Services (DES) committee and emceed by DES Chairs, Tommy Sidebottom, PE and Jack Wegleitner. The evening included:  • A short interview with SEAONC Past President, Joe Sutton, where he touched on his career and recollections from the day the earthquake struck the Bay Area • An online trivia/quiz created by the Hensolt SEAONC Legacy Committee (HSLC) to test attendees’ knowledge of the earthquake, followed by an enlightening video highlight of news clips from the day of the event (take the quiz yourself here: https://lnkd.in/gfBTWcU7 • An open floor discussion where attendees could share their own personal memories and professional experiences with the earthquake • A panel comprised of David Mar, Kevin Moore, and David Bonowitz, moderated by Stefanie Rae A., reflecting on how engineers responded to the events in the following days, months, and years, as well as where we are (and their thoughts on where we should be) headed in terms of functional recovery and seismic design 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗢𝘂𝘁 The Great ShakeOut is an annual day of earthquake preparedness. All around the world, companies, schools, and homes participate in earthquake drills on this day to ensure people know the best ways to stay safe in an earthquake. In recognition of this day, we want to share some helpful resources about earthquake preparation and safety. Please see attached poster highlighting some of the best resources we have found. These resources include tips on how to properly prepare for an earthquake, how to remain safe during an earthquake, and what to do after an earthquake.

Drop and cover! In honor of Earthquake Preparedness Week, all of our offices participated in the Great Shakeout 2024 earlier today. These annual drills are a great reminder of essential safety practices—like “drop, cover, hold on” and keeping emergency kits up to date. They also give us a chance to test our firmwide readiness for the next big seismic event. Check out Megan Schroeder and Kaira Campos from our San Diego office, showing off their best “drop and cover” moves during this morning’s drill! Want to get involved? However, the application of machine and deep learning in structural engineering remains largely untapped by most firms with widespread adoption still in its infancy. As a result, the full potential of AI to solve complex engineering challenges and fundamentally reshape the profession is yet to be realized. In this presentation, Dave will explore how these emerging technologies are poised to influence the future of structural engineering, offering both significant challenges and new opportunities. The discussion will also dive into business and client-driven strategies for evaluating AI solutions, developing AI-powered workflows in-house, and ensuring that human expertise remains central to the adoption and integration of these tools. Come join us as we help to equip engineers with a balanced perspective on leveraging AI while preserving the core values and skills that define our profession. The presentation includes a lively discussion of AI advancements, how AI tools can improve business practices, the practical and usable machine learning applications that firms of all sizes can adopt, the potential of cutting-edge AI to affect structural engineering, whether emerging AI startups are positioning themselves as suppliers or future competitors, and a discussion on the ethical integration of AI. This summer, the San Francisco Bay Area offices turned up the fun with a series of socials! 🌞 From a Degenkolb-themed scavenger hunt where teams found buildings around the SF office that we've worked on through clues and riddles 🏢🔍, to a lively happy hour celebrating the wins afterward, we made the most of our local landmarks! We also enjoyed some great food truck eats and fun times at Spark Social SF 🍔🚚 and got our creative juices flowing at a Paint by Deg night where we each brought Deg, our company mascot, to life on canvas. 🎨 Teamwork, creativity, and community—this summer had it all. #SummerSocials #TeamBuilding #SummerFun
