🏡 “I Want to Go Home” – Understanding the Deeper Meaning in Dementia Care If you’ve ever heard someone with dementia say, “I want to go home,” you may have been puzzled—especially if they’re already in a place they’ve lived for years. But for someone living with dementia, the phrase “home” often means much more than just a physical location. Think about what ‘home’ means to you. It’s not just four walls or an address. Home is where you feel safe. It’s a place of 🛋️ comfort, 🛖 familiarity, and 🛡️ security—where your loved ones are, where you feel understood, and where you can relax. For those with dementia, when they say, “I want to go home,” it’s often a reflection of a deeper emotional need. It can be their way of expressing: A desire for comfort when they feel confused or overwhelmed 😔. A longing for the familiar when the world around them feels unpredictable or scary 🌍. A search for reassurance and a sense of belonging 🫂. Instead of correcting them or telling them they’re already home, it’s important to respond with compassion ❤️. Ask yourself: What are they truly feeling in this moment? How can I provide them with the comfort or security they’re seeking? 🤔 In my Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care (ADDC) seminar, we cover how to respond to phrases like “I want to go home” with empathy and practical strategies that address the emotional needs behind the words. It’s not just about communication—it’s about recognizing the deeper message and responding in a way that reduces anxiety and fosters connection 💬. If you’re interested in learning more about compassionate, effective dementia care techniques, join my upcoming seminar.
