Our partners at Noema Magazine have just published a compelling new article on Democratic Odyssey, highlighting this groundbreaking initiative aimed at reshaping democratic governance. From September 29 to October 1, the pilot assembly will convene in Athens, where democracy first took root, and toward the creation of a permanent Standing Peoples' Assembly in Europe. Supported by the Berggruen Institute, the Democratic Odyssey is designed to bridge the gap between EU institutions and its citizens, offering a new model for bottom-up engagement in policy making. According to Noema’s Editor in Chief Nathan Gardels, as the world watches the unfolding political landscape in the United States, the innovation taking place in Athens could have even greater long-term significance for democracy’s future, in Europe and the world. Together with the Kofi Annan Foundation, we are deeply concerned about the ongoing persecution of pro-democracy activists in Zimbabwe. On August 1st, Namatai K. Kwekweza, the recipient of the 2023 Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize, along with Robson Chere, Samuel Gwenzi, and Vusumuzi Moyo, were forcibly removed from a plane. Reports indicate they were tortured while being held incommunicado for hours. The four pro-democracy activists appeared before the Harare Magistrate Court on Friday, facing charges of disorderly conduct. They were accused of involvement in a demonstration protesting the detention of Jameson Timba, a leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) faction. Namatai Kwekweza, a renowned human rights activist and the founder of WELEAD TRUST, has been a relentless advocate for democracy and youth participation. Her dedication and bravery have earned her international recognition, including the 2023 Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize. Namatai is scheduled to speak at the 2024 Athens Democracy Forum. Together with our colleagues at the Kofi Annan Foundation, we are deeply concerned about reports that Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize winner Namatai K. has been detained by security services in Harare. We call on the Zimbabwean authorities to confirm her whereabouts and explain what charges are being brought against her. Without charges, Namatai should be released immediately.
