Amazing Day 1 at #BioFuture yesterday! Among the terrific sessions, Max Bayer of Endpoints News along with Virginia Amann, Seth Flaum of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, Greg Simon and Arda Ural, MSc, MBA, PhD of EY brought thought provoking insights about the the #BIOSECUREACT that, if passed, will bar US companies from working with certain China-based biotech contractors. Supporters claim it will protect Americans' personal health information and the U.S. pharmaceutical supply chains but critics point to disruption to the industry that will hinder patients and the economy.

Fun to chat with my friend Manolis Kellis from MIT about all things AI and bio at the BioFuture meeting in NYC at Cure. Manolis is a human dynamo! Or is he AI? Hmmm… Manolis started with a short lecture and a dazzling download of projects from his lab, talking about using AI for everything from making sense of massively complex DNA and omic/molecular testing to tracking emotions. Then he and I talked about what’s real with AI amidst all the claims and hype - and what we can trust and what we can’t. He’s bullish and passionate about AI and bio but he’s also pragmatic about not overpromising and about what AI is good at - and what it’s not. Also whether AI will augment docs and researchers and others in healthcare or may replace them (he was direct about this). Thanks to Seema Kumar for a wonderful introduction on stage and to Sara Jane Demy and Sara Pinto of Demy-Colton for inviting me to speak and for creating this amazing event.

Incredible first day at BioFuture right down the block from me in NYC! In particular, one segment of the final session I attended highlighted the biggest bottlenecks biotech companies face in early development. The speakers cited the importance of IP, the conundrum that innovation is happening but the bar for innovative products to get funding is higher than ever, the average cost of filing a BLA alone being $50M, ongoing hurdles in patient enrollment, etc. But what truly captivated me was the conversation around the impact of an organization’s Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC) approach. One speaker pointed out that nearly a third of biotech companies fail due to a weak CMC strategy. This challenge resonates even more given the potential implications of the BioSecure Act on CMC development. There’s so much to unpack about the Act’s reach, but I think Greg Simon captured it best today in an earlier panel. To paraphrase: "Operating out of a response to a perceived threat is a good way to lose. Our greatest export is healthcare; why not use healthcare to build a bridge with China?” #BioFuture2024 #Reimaginethefutureofhealthcare #BioFutureNYC #Biotech #BioPharma #HealthcareInnovation
