Countdown to reopening Michigan Central Station: 85 days To celebrate #313Day in Detroit, we’re counting down the days until the reopening of the iconic Michigan Central Station June 6, showcasing the work and the men and women who helped get it done. Originally opened in 1913 as Detroit’s main passenger depot, Michigan Central Station stood 18 stories high and 650,000 square feet and included both the station and office space. Over the next seven decades, it would, at its peak, move more than 4,000 passengers on around 200 trains each day. After it’s closing in 1988, the building spent the next 30 years being left to the Michigan elements as well as vandals, deteriorating rapidly. Reversing three decades of dilapidation doesn’t come easy. As we countdown to the reopening, we’ll highlight the work it took to take Michigan Central Station from a symbol of decline to a model of historic preservation and centerpiece of innovation.
