Humans and other animals need darkness. With the support of advocates including the Museum of Science, a bill that would regulate light pollution gained momentum in the Massachusetts legislature this session. I grew up in Tucson, a city on the cutting edge of lighting ordinances due to its strong astronomy presence, and I'm a space nerd, so I've always had a personal passion for this issue. But the environmental and health impacts of bad lighting are huge. Boston will never be as dark as rural New Hampshire, but small changes across the state like pointing lights downward and limiting blue light (it's everywhere!) can make a big difference for ecosystems and human well-being. And it can make life more fun! How many of us wished the bill had passed when the aurora borealis appeared in New England in May?

Did you know that the official temperature for the City of Boston gets recorded at Logan Airport? A Better City recently launched an Extreme Heat Temperature Sensor Pilot Program, aimed to collect data from Boston neighborhoods to help us better understand the heat variances between the officially recorded temperature, to what residents truly experience. The Boston Globe's coverage today dove into how heat impacts our neighborhoods, and the issues of Boston being a heat island and the impacts of redlining. Read more to learn about how A Better City and its partners plan to use this data for a healthier, cooler city.

As the City of Boston continues to see record- breaking heat, the Boston Globe dove into how heat impacts our neighborhoods, and the issues of Boston being a heat island and the impacts of redlining. “If you overlay Boston’s heat maps with maps of formerly redlined neighborhoods, it’s pretty striking, the overlap that’s there and the correlation that’s there,” said Isabella Gambill, the assistant director of climate, energy, and resilience at A Better City , an environment and infrastructure-focused nonprofit in Boston. Thank you to our dedicated partners and project co-leads: The Boston Foundation, Boston University School of Public Health, and the City of Boston Environment Department! Read more about extreme heat, and the research A Better City is supporting through their Extreme Heat Temperature Sensor Pilot Project. #mapoli #extremeheat #heatisland #redlining

Clear communications, compelling storytelling, and community building are key components of advancing positive change. It was an honor to present with my Denterlein colleague Jovanny Rosado at this year's NESHCo's annual conference on positioning and messaging strategies for advocacy and stakeholder engagement successes. Additionally, I am proud that our firm earned a gold Lamplighter Award for the second year in a row in recognition of our work on the Massachusetts Dental Society's successful Yes on 2 for Better Dental Benefits campaign, which delivered first in the nation consumer protections to dental patients in Massachusetts thanks to voters in the 2022 election.

Congratulations to former New England Cable News Political Reporter Alison King on her induction to the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame Thursday! Our CEO, Geri Denterlein, and Senior VP Peter J. Howe, a colleague of Alison's during his years as NECN Business Editor and "CEO Corner" host, were thrilled to celebrate with Alison and her NECN and NBC10 colleagues in recognizing her tremendous quarter-century career bringing us all the important political news from #mapoli to the New Hampshire primaries to national political conventions and more. Our congratulations to all the rest of this year's inductees and gratitude for their extraordinary contributions to keeping us informed and entertained--and so often both at the same time! They are: Barbara Bernard of WBEC and WHYN; former WCVB General Manager Bill Fine; radio personalities Joe Martelle and Andy Moes; WGBH Senior Investigative Reporter Phillip Martin; WEEI sportscaster Glenn Ordway; Candy O'Terry of WMJX and Boston Women in Media & Entertainment; and Pebbles (Susan Semedo) of HOT 96.9 and JAM'N 94.5. As great white sharks have returned to the Cape for the summer season, national media outlets have leaned on Atlantic White Shark Conservancy experts for their voice, featured in publications like the Associated Press, Forbes, CBS, and much more. Members of the Denterlein team recently got to spend the day at AWSC’s shark center in Chatham, where the shared with media this season’s plans for white shark research, educational programming, and expanded accessibility at their Shark Centers. We’re excited to dive into the summer season and continue supporting all of the organization’s incredible work!

What better way to kick off #PrideMonth than celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community and the many contributions of leaders from across Greater Boston making change for a more equitable and inclusive Commonwealth?   Our team had a great time at the Boston Business Journal Business of Pride event last week, and we look forward to joining other festivities throughout the month (and year-round).    The event was also a reminder of how, each year, more companies are adopting communications (and marketing) campaigns to demonstrate allyship. The most successful of those are ones that reflect authentic actions to advance LGBTQIA+ priorities and celebrate team contributions. That's why we wanted to re-share these five things to keep in mind for successful campaigns that support LGBTQIA+ rights movements and promote self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of this community.   https://lnkd.in/e8HHGAXV

To help elevate the stories of Latino entrepreneurs in the Commonwealth is to shift narratives, provide opportunities, and highlight the critical role of the Latinx community in fueling and keeping our economy strong. We admire the work of Amplify LatinX and their role in bolstering Latino-owned businesses in Massachusetts. In Suffolk County alone, the Latino community is contributing $9 billion to the economy (Boston Indicators). https://lnkd.in/ezTBXjgm

“Good story listening always comes before good storytelling.” VP Jovanny Rosado joined the 2024 Amplify LatinX Business Summit and delivered an “ALX talk” about the power of storytelling for business visibility in today’s ever-saturated business and media environments. And we got to hear about his favorite storyteller of all time: his abuela. Congratulations to the ALX team for such an impactful, engaging, and inspirational summit. It was great to connect with Latino entrepreneurs from across the region, hear from leaders amplifying Latino voices for a more equitable Commonwealth, and more. We’re already excited for next year!
