Denver Language School (DLS) is a public charter K-8 language immersion school in Denver Public Schools. Our mission is to to achieve academic excellence and intercultural competence through language immersion education. We off two language programs, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, in which the target language is both the content and the medium of instruction. The DLS culture is based on three guiding principles and five core values: - High Standards - To create an academic culture which expects high achievement and best efforts from all students, while ensuring they have the necessary support to succeed. - Integrated Values and Beliefs - To build a common understanding that each student will embrace a community-based perspective, sharing in its benefits, responsibilities and sacrifices. - Personalized Instruction and Attention - To create a learning community where students are nurtured and supported individually and collectively to achieve their potential. We opened our doors in August of 2010. Today, we are the #1 choice for kindergarten throughout the entire DPS system. We have expanded to offer K-8 education and are housed in two buildings in Denver.

I ❤️spending time in schools working with incredible educators. Today was no exception-my first day at Denver Language School with Richard Royal Annie Trujillo Christine Loven-Santos and their brilliant team of middle leaders. Listening to what they are proud of and what they would like their legacy to be was both inspiring and humbling. It was also fantastic to see their language immersion in Mandarin and Spanish in action. Blown away by the kindergarten groups!

Helping educators to teach writing in the best way possible is my favorite part of the job. Too many teachers are given no marking and feedback tools for writing, are using a state rubric that was never designed to be a teaching tool, and just don’t know the highest leverage pieces to teach and provide feedback for. Seeing the growth in 8th grade Chinese at Denver Language School has exceeded all expectations of what we set out to do this year. Good teachers, coaches, and leaders, want guidance and want to be pushed. I’m so grateful to them in this work 💜

Nominee: Lifetime Achievement Award. Camilla Modesitt, J.D. One of the founders of DLS, former Board Chair, and current senior leader, Camilla is a well deserved nominee and finalist for the Colorado League of Charter Schools Lifetime Achievement Award. A visionary in the field of immersion education in western United States, this recognition (after nearly twenty years of service in our community) is absolutely appropriate and indicative of her outstanding contributions. Camilla's recent accomplishments include: i. Ensuring Governor Jared Polis is fully briefed on the global opportunities our charter school provides the young people of Denver; ii. Partnering with Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero and Dr. Christian Sawyer as part of Denver Public Schools' work with Harvard University on improving K-2 outcomes; iii.
