🎉Today is the 100th birthday of a true Denver Public Schools staple, Dr. Evie Dennis. She is the namesake of a large school campus in our Far Northeast area that is home to SOAR Charter School, Vista Academy, DSST Green Valley Ranch Middle and High Schools, and Rocky Mountain Prep Middle School as well as a state of the art athletic facility. Dr. Dennis left an indelible mark on DPS throughout her career. Starting as a teacher in 1966, she was named the first Black Superintendent for DPS in 1990. Her dedication to improving and ensuring equal educational opportunities for all students has been unwavering. She also excelled in amateur and professional athletics. Her commitment to excellence and community engagement has earned her a well-deserved induction into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2023. She was inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame Class of 2008. Happy birthday, Dr. Dennis!🥳

"Cathie builds a supportive and equitable classroom where students talk about their differences and the supports they need to help them learn at the early ages of 3 and 4. She knows the importance of acceptance and belonging. When a student is upset, she supports the child to name their feeling and express why they feel that way. Then, she will restate the issue for the class and ask her students for some ideas on how we can support this student either emotionally or academically. It allows feelings to become the center of importance in the classroom. It values and teaches empathy for others in a supportive way. Students are already expressing their feelings and supporting their friends independently. The Multilingual Education Department recently celebrated educators across the district at the annual MLE Biliteracy Conference. 🎊This year's conference provided professional learning designed to empower teachers with the latest strategies for supporting multilingual learners. Empower your students to become climate leaders by putting their ideas into action! 💡 The DPS Sustainability Team is encouraging applications to this year's Climate Champions Grant Program! 🌎 The program provides funding for student-led climate action projects, and it gives students the opportunity to solve real-world challenges within their community, develop leadership skills, and engage in project-based learning that will foster innovative and creative solutions to climate change. ✅ All grade levels can apply. ✅ Project teams can request up to $25K in funding. ❌ DPS charter schools are not allowed to apply at this time. This is the second year of the Climate Champions Grant Program, and it is in partnership with Denver CASR and their Climate Protection Fund.
