This past weekend, 15 Denver Barbarians Rugby Club players and staff enjoyed the sweet taste of success, winning the prestigious #RugbyTown7s tournament with the Denver Selects team. #Barbos 7s stars Cody Melphy, OLY (captain and Olympian), Mickey Bateman, David Hightower, Campbell Johnstone, Iosefo Selevasio, Nick Johnson, and 15s skipper Alex Wormer (who missed the tournament due to injury), former players Malik Bryant, Jeremy Misailegalu, and Lance Williams, coaches Jason Kelly and Steve LaPorta, manager Howard Kent, trainer Purvi Desai P.T, and S&C coach Riglie Reeves made tournament history by becoming the first team to win the showpiece event three times. With 20 strong teams from five countries competing for silverware and the $10,000 prize, this end-of-season tournament victory is a reflection of the positive influence and impact the Denver Barbarians Rugby Club 7s program is having nationwide. Competing in four 7s tournaments across the country before reforming as Denver Selects this past weekend, Denver Barbarians Rugby Club won two, were runners-up once, and placed 3rd in the USA Rugby National Championship🥇🥇🥈🥉 This level of success is testament to the hard work and commitment of all the players, coaches, and support staff over recent summers. Now it’s time to convert our 7s success into 15s glory once again. Training is Mondays and Wednesdays, 8:00-10:00pm at Infinity Park Turf Field, Denver, CO 80246. At the weekend, Denver Barbarians Rugby Club 7s squad travelled to Madison, Wisconsin, to compete in the USA Rugby National 7s Championship. Barbos won all three pool games, defeating Olympic Club 26-0, Dallas Reds 22-12, and White Plains 31-12, before pummeling NOVA 24-0 in the quarterfinal. With four wins from four games and an aggregate score of 103-24, Barbos were buoyant going into the semifinal against tournament favorite NAV. But we saved our least cohesive performance for the biggest game, falling short 5-19 at the final whistle. We bounced back in the 3rd place play-off game, beating St Louis Bombers 19-12 to take a well deserved bronze. Coming 3rd in the whole of the country is a huge achievement, especially given our only defeat was to NAV in the semifinal, who went on to lift the National Championship once again. 2024 has been a fruitful 7s season, with a record of two tournament victories, one runner-up, and 3rd in the Nationals. Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved in organizing, participating, and supporting our quest for 7s glory.
