About us
The acclaimed Detroit Symphony Orchestra is known for trailblazing performances, collaborations with the world’s foremost musical artists, and a deep connection to its city. Led by Music Director Jader Bignamini since 2020, the DSO makes its home at historic Orchestra Hall within the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center, offering a performance schedule that features the PVS Classical, PNC Pops, Paradise Jazz, and Young People’s Family Concert series. In addition, the DSO presents the William Davidson Neighborhood Concert Series in metro area venues, as well as eclectic multi-genre performances in its mid-size venue The Cube, constructed and curated with support from Peter D. & Julie F. Cummings. A dedication to broadcast innovation began in 1922, when the DSO became the first orchestra in the world to present a live radio broadcast of a concert and continues today with the groundbreaking Live from Orchestra Hall series of free webcasts. Since its first school concerts a century ago, and particularly since the founding of the Civic Youth Ensembles in 1970, the DSO has been a national leader in bringing the benefits of music education to students, teachers, and families in Detroit and surrounding communities. The DSO remains committed to expanding its participation in the growth and well-being of Detroit through programs like its Detroit Neighborhood Initiative—cultural events co-created with community partners and residents—and Detroit Harmony, a promise to provide an instrument and instruction to any student in the city who wants to learn. With unwavering support from the people of Detroit, the DSO actively pursues a mission to impact lives through the power of unforgettable musical experiences.

Spotted: Detroit Harmony instrument try-out station at Wednesday night's Fall Fest concert in Core City 👀 Pairing music exploration with performance means feeling instruments in your own hands and then hearing what those same instruments can do in the hands of the orchestra. Rapt eyes, excited chatter, and dancing filled our night. The Detroit Harmony instrument drive is going strong through 11/16. We are just days away from the Opening Night Gala with Branford Marsalis; and we are excited to share with you that this year, we will be honoring Fred and Barbara Erb! The Erbs' love of jazz and deep appreciation for its significance in Detroit’s musical history inspired their endowed support of the Fred A. Erb Jazz Creative Director Chair at the DSO, currently held by Terence Blanchard. Today, the Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Family Foundation continues their legacy of preserving a culturally vibrant jazz scene and mentorship. We look forward to celebrating the legacy and contributions of Fred and Barbara Erb with you on September 28! https://bit.ly/4dZ1WSN #ErbFoundation #IAMDSO #Jazz #Detroit

#LearningandEngagement: Students from our CYE Senza program recently welcomed Kennedy Center ambassadors from The National Committee for the Performance Arts on a tour of the music center! The day included conversations about art and music education in Detroit; students also shared how being involved in Senza builds a community where music is the foundation of peer connection and nurtures both their musical and personal identity. About Senza: Senza, meaning “without” in Italian, is designed to create a space for students without limitations. At the DSO, Senza is a professional development music program that offers a personalized curriculum of courses, mentorship, cultural experiences, community engagement, practical experience, and networking for selected high school students. The program prioritizes inclusion and participation of students from communities currently underrepresented in classical music, with a goal of building a strong cohort of students who learn, lead, and grow together through the program. Senza is generously supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. #IAMDSO #Detroit #MusicEducation #Arts #KennedyCenterNCPA #KeepArtsAlive
