Develop for Good

This summer, we collaborated with Bloomberg's Corporate Philanthropy and Engineering Recruiting teams to help pilot the Best Of Bloomberg (BOB) Hacks volunteer program 💻 During this 7-week program, 21 Bloomberg college interns and 8 mentors from Bloomberg's Engineering department applied design-thinking to develop technology solutions for nonprofits. This included gathering stakeholder requirements, prototyping solutions in a 12-hour hackathon, and pitching their proposals to our nonprofit partners. Together with them, Develop for Good will be exploring the further development of the tech projects proposed by Bloomberg interns. Many thanks to our friends at Bloomberg - Kristie Ramdeo, Morgan Quercia, Lumilla Laporte, Vanessa Luna, Malia Simonds, and Darlene Escobar - for the opportunity to support bringing this initiative to life. This spring, we became the first nonprofit startup admitted to StartX in 3 years. StartX is an accelerator dedicated to supporting the best Stanford University entrepreneurs. $24M is raised on average per accepted company, and 1 out of every 28 companies becomes a $1 billion+ unicorn within 7-8 years. Alumni companies include Patreon, Lime, OpenSea, and Kodiak Sciences. Nearly 200 corporate mentor volunteers and college students joined our Summer '24 Demo Day sponsored by Bloomberg, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and EY! 🚀 Our Demo Day Mentors were blown away by the real-world software products our 430+ diverse college students and industry mentors built this summer for innovative nonprofits like Ashoka, empowr., and BobaTalks. Here were some of our Demo Day Mentors’ thoughts after mock interviewing our students: “It was inspiring to meet the students. The level of collaboration and their presentation skills were very impressive. They were able to accomplish so much in 16 weeks and then clearly articulate their challenge and how they addressed it with prototypes and user testing - incredible. I'm in awe of how they managed a project amongst 8 people who had no previous experience working with each other. The Color of Tech: You're Hired! (Presented by Develop for Good) Topic: Recruitment Strategies and Practices for a Diverse Tech Future The Color of Tech is a virtual conversation about diversity in tech spaces—particularly the lack of representation when it comes to African American and LatinX communities. This panel event focuses on recruitment and hiring practices. If we hope to improve diversity in the tech workforce, we must explore strategies and practices for recruiting diverse professionals. Our students are collectively affiliated with more than 300 different college campuses, and our industry mentors represent over 120 different companies. Notably, 83% of the students we’ve served are underserved or underrepresented in tech! Last week, we were invited to The White House Summit on STEMM Equity and Excellence. Develop for Good was selected as an Alliance Partner to the first U.S. National Strategy to achieve STEMM parity by 2050! 🇺🇸 Co-hosted by The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the STEMM Opportunity Alliance, the Summit unveiled the Biden-Harris Administration’s multi-sector actions to help 20M people from historically excluded and marginalized communities enter, contribute to, and thrive in STEMM fields. Develop for Good is honored and excited to contribute to this national goal by providing real-world tech project experiences to diverse college students at scale. We believe that diversity is a competitive advantage, and that providing more STEMM opportunities for people of all backgrounds is essential to achieving our greatest aspirations as a nation.
