Recently, at the ICGFM conference, DevTech's Director of Public Financial Management (#PFM) and Economic Governance Jose Pineda presented on the important issue of #DebtTransparency. #PublicDebt in low and middle-income countries (#LMICs) continues to rise, highlighting the urgent need for greater financial accountability. By promoting transparency and improving debt management, countries can enhance fiscal sustainability, attract investment, and strengthen democratic governance. In fact, the Debt Transparency Monitor framework developed by DevTech's PFM team under USAID’s Fiscal Accountability and Sustainable Trade (FAST) project, which provides critical insights into debt transparency among LMICs, has a direct relationship with credit score rankings and can be used to improve fiscal policy. New Insights article available on our website, originally developed for USAID's Bureau for Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance (#DRG) Bureau by Senior Communications Officer Adrienne Uselman, under our USAID Swift Expertise and Grounded Analytics (SEGA) contract. By helping to uncover complex social and political dynamics, Political Economy Analyses (#PEAs) are a powerful tool that can support designing and adapting programs that enable locally led development. The Governance Action Hub's work in #Colombia's energy sector provides for an excellent example of how PEAs can be used to answer the question “where can our efforts contribute to the greatest progress?” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eRVHUGv3 #locallyleddevelopment #governance

Earlier this month, DevTech President & CEO Rafael Romeu delivered one of the opening keynote speeches at the ICGFM conference, which brings together public financial management (#PFM) experts from around the world. The speech addressed an issue of critical importance for development stakeholders to consider in today's global economic context of highly indebted lower and middle income countries: should development agencies such as USAID reintroduce concessional loans in their foreign assistance portfolios? 💡 Rafael, Daniel F. Runde, and Austin Hardman also address this question in a recent report published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), "Reintroducing Concessional Loans into the Development Toolbox," suggesting that concessional loans can help fuel long-term economic growth through revenue-generating projects. 📖 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eXXUrQ5G #ForeignAid #DebtRelief #DevelopmentPolicy #ICGFM24 #SustainableGrowth #EconomicDevelopment

Last month, the USAID #Indonesia Economic Growth Support Activity (EGSA), implemented by DevTech, delivered a series of trainings for 50 economic planners from within the Ministry of National Development Planning (#Bappenas) 📈. The trainings, led by Professor Arief Anshory Yusuf, a prominent economic modeler in Indonesia from Universitas Padjadjaran, focused on conducting policy impact analyses using a Computable General Equilibrium (#CGE) model 📊. CGE models offer governments a valuable tool for understanding the complex dynamics of their economies and making informed decisions about economic development policies. By simulating the potential impacts of various scenarios, policymakers can identify the most effective strategies for promoting economic growth, equity, and sustainability 🌱. During the trainings, participants practiced analyzing the impact of several economic development scenarios using an Indonesia-specific CGE model called "IndoTERM." The impact analysis will inform the creation of Indonesia’s Medium-Term Development Plan for 2025 – 2029 📚. This technical assistance is a follow up to EGSA’s previous support in 2022, when EGSA updated the IndoTERM database and developed a policy dashboard for rapid analysis, which shows the sustainability of USAID support in strengthening Indonesia’s economic planning capacity. #CGEModel #PolicyAnalysis #EconomicGrowth

Curious about how international labor interventions can drive positive change in the industrial sector? Read our new evaluation and associated briefs to discover how the Bureau of International Labor Affairs's (ILAB) interventions in Mexico’s automotive sector have helped improve working conditions and foster a fairer labor environment. 💪🚗 🔗Report: https://ow.ly/Tzf950TreP2 🔗Briefs: https://ow.ly/zf1g50TAvs3 These products provide information on the effectiveness of ILAB's interventions and emergent opportunities for further improvement. By better understanding how these interventions have impacted workers' lives and the automotive sector more broadly, development stakeholders can continue to develop effective strategies to promote #laborrights and sustainable business practices.

Excited to see the evaluation that our Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning team has been working on for the U.S. Department of Labor's (DOL) Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB) focused on labor standards in the Mexican automotive industry is now live! As always, we are proud to partner with the DOL and ILAB to support them in their important work of improving labor standards around the 🌎. #Mexico #AutomotiveIndustry #LaborStandards
When we help raise labor standards in Mexico’s automotive sector, wages and working conditions rise, leveling the playing field for U.S. #auto workers. We are proud to partner with the government of Mexico in its efforts to strengthen labor rights to protect workers and promote acceptable working conditions in the sector. An independent evaluation by DevTech Systems, Inc. found our technical assistance in the sector has successfully: ✅ Strengthened labor law enforcement through enhancing labor inspections, strengthening institutional coordination, and proactively addressing labor law violations; ✅ Improved employers’ compliance with labor laws, including through support for proactive measures to prevent violations; and ✅ Enhanced the capacity of workers, unions, and civil society to engage on the labor reform protections and raised workers’ awareness of their labor rights. The evaluation provides recommendations to build on this success and ensure our technical assistance has an even greater impact in the automotive sector. https://lnkd.in/erTSP6EK Congratulations to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson (https://lnkd.in/gYYw3Q9h) in receiving the 2024 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Their work was awarded the Nobel Prize “for studies of how institutions are formed and affect prosperity.” For DevTech Systems, Inc., understanding the intersection between #economic #governance and #development is critical. #Institutions play a fundamental role in economic development, as underscored by the work of this year’s Nobel Prize winners. They argue that #inclusive political and economic institutions foster an environment conducive to innovation, investment, and broad-based participation in economic activities, ultimately driving sustained growth. In contrast, extractive institutions—those that concentrate power and resources in the hands of a few—undermine incentives for growth and development. Acemoglu’s research, particularly in "Why Nations Fail," highlights that institutional quality, rather than geography or culture, is a key determinant of long-term economic prosperity.
