Umoja Empowerment, our employee resource group (ERG) that supports Black employees and allies to lead, contribute, and thrive within the organization, hosted their second annual Industry Day event for Howard University’s students in the College of Engineering and Architecture. The event was held at our Fairfax, Virginia, office, providing a day filled with many educational opportunities. The students met with our college recruitment team to submit their resumes and took professional headshots to prepare them for the workforce. The students attended a Q&A with our CEO Don Stone, shadowed working professionals, participated in industry-specific activities and presentations, and networked with senior leaders. Malyka Norville, a recent Howard University graduate who also participated in last year’s Industry Day as a student, shared about her experience of joining Dewberry as a full-time employee after graduation. As an alumni of Howard University, Malyka shared insights about the importance of building professional networks and making the most out of career learning opportunities like Industry Day. We enjoyed spending the day with the students and we’re looking forward to seeing them grow into their careers. Thank you all for visiting us! #DewberryCares #ERGatDewberry

Check out this recent WMBB-TV news coverage that featured our firm’s partnership with Destination Panama City on an environmental sustainability project in Panama City, Florida. This project, the Living Shoreline, aims to boost the overall health of St. Andrew’s Bay’s ecosystem, by installing reef ball models near the sea wall that will bring back marine life and replenish the balance of the ecosystem. Our team kicked off the project by providing seagrass surveying in the bay, which was completed ahead of October 1, a crucial deadline as seagrass surveying can only be conducted during certain times of the year. To support the snorkel-enabled seagrass study, our health, safety, and environment team created a plan to prioritize our employees’ safety. It’s #WorldArchitectureDay! We want to celebrate how architecture can support well-being, sustainability, access, and resilience in our communities. In honor of this year’s World Architecture Day, our architecture practice and members of our Black employee resource group, Umoja Empowerment, held a napkin sketch competition focused on the theme “how does architecture bring people together?” and encouraged all employees to participate in the fun! Shout out to the competition winners Nathan Custer, NCARB, AIA, LEED AP (picture #1), Eric Vogt (picture #2) and Wendy Argueta (picture #3 and #4), and the judges Erica Nelles, AIA, LEED AP, Roderick Williams, Jean O'Toole, and Jonathan Crump for helping make this event a success.
