Identify, cultivate and inspire future Asian American leaders within the legal profession.

About us

Founded in 2014 by two past presidents of the Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”), the Don H. Liu Scholars Program, Inc. (“Program”) seeks to identify, cultivate and inspire future Asian American leaders within the legal profession in order to address the single most important reality facing Asian American professionals today – the barrier to advancement. Asian Americans remain grossly underrepresented in positions of influence, leadership and power within the legal profession. The number of Asian American partners in law firms and general counsel in our largest corporations do not reflect the diversity found in today’s law school classes or the ranks of junior associates at law firms. It is the mission of the Program to increase these numbers. In its inaugural year, the Program awarded $15,000 each to its first two Don H. Liu Scholars (“Scholars”) and provided mentorship to ensure that each Scholar would start her career at a prominent law firm. In its second year, the Selection Committee chose three new Scholars who possess the greatest potential to both excel in the classroom and succeed at a top law firm or Fortune 500 corporation. To support these emerging Asian American leaders, the Program will continue to award each Scholar $15,000 (“Scholarship”). To qualify, each new Scholar must be a first year law student attending a New York City metropolitan area law school, have completed one full semester, and intend to practice in the New York City metropolitan area private sector following graduation. In addition to the Scholarship, the Program will provide the Scholars mentorship and assistance with internship placement and career development.

  • The Don H. Liu Scholars Program would like to officially congratulate Don Liu on his recent retirement from Target, Inc.! Don’s rise from his humble beginnings serves as an excellent reminder that hard work and grit will open countless doors in one’s career. As the eldest of three children, Don and his family immigrated to the United States from South Korea when he was 10 years old. At a young age, Don learned how to operate businesses by assisting his father with the series of businesses that he built up, all the while maintaining stellar grades and keeping family values close to his heart. From there, Don earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and religion degree from Haverford College, and he worked his way up to earning his Juris Doctor degree as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar from Columbia Law School. Don then worked as an associate for the prestigious law firms Simpson, Thacher and Bartlett, and Richards & O’Neil. In 1992, he pivoted to in-house positions. After many successful stints at Aetna, IKON Office Solutions, Toll Brothers, Inc., and Xerox Corporation, Don became the Chief Legal Officer of Target in 2016. Don forged a path of upward mobility for Asian-American attorneys across the country. His story inspired countless Asian attorneys in a time where seeing an Asian-American in such a powerful position was uncommon. Despite the many obstacles in his way, Don never lost sight of who he truly was, and never backed down from an opportunity to help others. Throughout his successful career, Don made genuine connections with countless attorneys, mentoring younger generations of attorneys as he himself was mentored by attorneys who came before him. Our scholarship - now 29 scholars strong - would not exist today without Don and his inspirational story. All of our scholars have benefitted from Don’s mentorship and tutelage, and we hope to pass that on to future generations of scholars. From the bottom of our hearts, the DHL Family wishes Don a very happy retirement. We are grateful for the incredible impact Don has made and continues to make through the scholarship, and we hope to carry on his legacy for many generations to come!

  • 📣 We are now accepting applications to the Don H. Liu Scholars Program 📣 A 2017 joint report from Yale Law School and NAPABA revealed that while AAPIs have entered every facet of the legal profession, we are underrepresented in top leadership positions across all sectors. We want to change that. The DHL Scholarship Program empowers AAPI law students to become leaders in the legal profession through scholarships, mentorship, and a supportive community. Are you the next DHL Scholar? Apply here: https://lnkd.in/eHfr_H-W #aapi #law #lawyer

I am honored to be included in this year’s #A100 List, along with my colleague and friend Prat Vemana.  Since the early days of my career, I have recognized the importance of representation to inspire AAPI professionals in the legal field and beyond. My hope is that this list, filled with so many extraordinary leaders who have made a lasting impact on their industries, will serve as a source of energy and motivation to the next generation.  Thank you Gold House for continuing to lift up the voices of our community so young Asian Americans can see themselves in what is possible. #GoldExcellence https://lnkd.in/g9_ic_YM
