If you’re looking at starting a career in construction, first of all— smart choice! Construction jobs are always in demand, and a career in the trades is lucrative and fulfilling. I majored in Construction Engineering at Montana State University, and have spent the past 28 years with Dick Anderson Construction. It’s been an incredible experience, and I wouldn’t change anything. Well, I would change some things… Here’s what I would tell my younger self, and anyone looking to get into construction today: ➡ Build your communication skills. When I first started at DAC, my soft skills were sorely lacking. I remember struggling to write an email and nervously presenting to my peers. My boss used to berate me, in a good way, critiquing my writing and presenting. Unfortunately, it’s not something that’s emphasized in a lot of engineering programs. I was tired of being critiqued by my boss, so I signed up for Toastmasters. It’s a 6 AM coffee with people you don’t know, and you have to speak for two minutes about a given topic in front of everyone. There are also three main presentations a year. It was a great place to get more public speaking experience in a friendly environment—and after a few years, I finally felt comfortable presenting to clients and owners. Whether you take comms classes in college, or do a program like Toastmasters, find a way to bolster your communication skills and it will serve you well! ➡ Get hands-on experience through an apprenticeship or internship program. Seek out as much formal on-the-job training as you can. You can do this through internships, summer jobs, and apprenticeship programs. Whether you’re a carpenter, electrician, or plumber, finding an apprenticeship program will equip you with the skills to be successful. At DAC, we’re proud to offer a robust apprenticeship program. We currently have 54 active apprentices in areas of study such as Construction Drawings, Trenching, Excavation, and Advanced Roof Systems. Coursework includes a combination of bookwork and lab studies. This is the best way to launch your career in the trades! Check out our apprenticeship program here: https://lnkd.in/gmkKGU3x To those who have been in construction for a few decades like me—what advice would you share? ___ #construction #careers #constructionlife

Hire the best people and then get out of their way. This is another lesson I’ve learned after 31 years in the construction industry. (And it applies to any organization in any industry.) In the end, it’s all about the people. Nobody builds anything by themselves. So, how do you hire the best people? Here’s what we’ve learned about hiring well at DAC: #1 — Encourage word-of-mouth referrals. DAC’s best hires are often through word-of-mouth referrals. This is an advantage for us because they come through a trusted employee who can vouch for the new hire’s character and work ethic. It's an advantage for new hires because they start work with someone they already know. With our referral incentive program, DAC employees can receive up to $10,000 depending on the position that the person they referred was hired for. #2 — Offer excellent pay and benefits. We're in a competitive market, and construction jobs are ramping up. Offering a top-tier compensation package is imperative to attracting the best talent. At DAC, we offer 100% employer-paid health and life insurance for employees and their families, as well as 401K, profit-sharing, and paid time off. #3 — Look for a strong work ethic and someone with the drive to advance in their career. A thorough interview process is a must. For salaried positions, we find it very helpful to bring them to a job site and show them around so they can get a feel for DAC and the projects we do. We don't always look for construction experience—we're looking for work ethic. #4 —Get out of their way. By this, I mean TRUST your people. Let them do their job. When you have a team of talented, capable people and a high-trust environment—the rest falls into place. We currently have multiple open positions at DAC. • ENCOURAGE • LISTEN • EMPOWER The individual decisions and actions of every team member determine the safety and success of any construction project. Regardless of their role, each person on the job has a profound responsibility to take the initiative, accountability, and personal ownership in keeping their team and job site safe. We must work to create an environment that encourages communication, teamwork, sharing of ideas and perspectives, and a commitment to listening and embracing every voice. This not only builds trust and confidence in every individual, it also deepens respect, unity, and understanding within teams at all levels. Everyone is empowered to use their voice, but voices only matter if they’re heard. Regarding safety, nothing is more important than listening, understanding and embracing what is communicated in the workplace. This is how we create the foundation for a culture that empowers and values every voice and ensures everyone in every role feels seen, heard, and supported. Positive change is the collective efforts of every company, project team, and individual. One decision can change an entire project, one incident can change an entire team, and one voice can inspire many more that can change an entire industry. It takes commitment, determination, and confidence in each and every one of us to create a strong safety culture that will impact our careers, families, community, and industry for generations to come.

This week is Construction Safety Week! 🚧 Safety Week is an opportunity to celebrate, share, and recommit to best safety practices in the construction industry. It started in 2014, when more than 40 national and global construction firms comprising the Construction Industry Safety Initiative (CISI) group and the Incident and Injury Free (IIF) CEO Forum joined forces with a single aim: to inspire everyone in the industry to be leaders in safety. As Construction Safety Week shares on their website—when we come together across our industry to share safety knowledge and best practices, we all benefit. Our workers and construction sites are safer, stronger and better equipped to shape the landscape of our communities. Most importantly, it’s about ensuring every worker gets home at the end of the day. At Dick Anderson Construction, we pride ourselves on our world-class safety program. We uphold this safety standard on every project and in every location. Those familiar with DAC will recognize this commitment to safety in our core value: Build it safely. Build it well.
