It’s 2024, and the pace of language change is as rapid as it has ever been. Our lexicographers are updating the dictionary more frequently than ever, doing the human-scale work of documenting words across the vast spectrum of the always-evolving English language. And wow, the variety is real: greedflation, fire tornado, girl dinner, climate breakdown, skiplagging, bed rotting, Barbiecore, range anxiety, keto flu, sound bath, slow fashion, shacket, stellar nursery, superfog, and many more. This year, one of the top lookups at Dictionary.com was the word "vibe," the current go-to term—along with the plural "vibes"—for talking about the overall feel of a situation or person. Which got us thinking: is there a vibe that perfectly expresses 2023? And so, for the first time, we’ve chosen a #VibeOfTheYear. (In addition to our traditional Word of the Year.) Our choice is inspired by the year’s most high-profile, record-setting, impossible-to-ignore cultural phenomenon. 🫶 But it’s about more than just Taylor. The Dictionary.com #VibeOfTheYear is "eras."

When we look back on 2023, we’ll remember it as the year that AI started to change how we work, learn, create, interact with (mis)information, and think about ourselves. To determine the 2023 #WordOfTheYear we gave ourselves a prompt: Using lexicography and data science, choose a single word that best represents, at this moment, AI’s many profound ramifications for the future of language and life. Like the output of many prompts, the result may not be what you were expecting. The Dictionary.com Word of the Year is "hallucinate."
