Interoperability starts at Home! Yes, it’s defined as the ability of computer systems to seamlessly exchange patient demographic and clinical information. Ten simple words, with extraordinary consequences, yet still feels “Holy Grailish”. There are many examples of the success and power when systems talk, however, what is sometimes lost, is that we create interoperability to the benefit of the patient first, then workforce and ultimately the business. Maybe something like this, Aim One: Improving the Health of the Population. ..Aim Two: Improving the Patient Experience. ...Aim Three: Reducing Costs. ...Aim Four: Improving Care Team Wellbeing. What I would argue is that integrated digital communications to the patient from the many internal operational departments of an organization is the start to the yellow brick road of interoperability. For example, the call center has a digital campaign for outreach (need to get an Annual Wellness Visit), nursing is communicating securely (Plan of Care), pharmacy operations is presenting refill requests (SecureRx), all to the same patient. These departments clearly have different management applications whether a CRM, Case Management System or Pharmacy Management System. Pharmacy needs visibility into the call center campaign, nursing communication and visa versa. Healthcare is complex.
