Announcing the 2024-2025 inaugural Kapor Foundation Research Fellowship with $40K stipend (led by our Chief Research Offier Sonia Koshy & team!) as an investment in the next generation of researchers and journalists investigating issues related to racial equity in tech and interrogating those who have created and work to maintain the current condition of the tech ecosystem. Up to 15 one-time, non-renewable grants of $40,000 to graduate student candidates writing dissertations or theses (in the final year of their programs) and journalists producing long form investigative reports on issues related to the Kapor Foundation’s priority areas: - CS Education Equity: Black, Latine, and Native students’ access to rigorous and culturally relevant CS education; the capacity of educators and administrators to implement culturally responsive CS pedagogy and curriculum; advocacy for education policy change. - Inclusive Pathways to Tech Jobs: Disparities in postsecondary computing education; alternative inclusive pathways to tech jobs; organizations and initiatives expanding access to tech jobs; new models of upskilling, reskilling, and hiring. - Tech Accountability: Racial equity in hiring, retention, and promotion at tech companies; valid and reliable data collection on those metrics; tech workplace conditions and worker protections; regulation/accountability of tech companies’ products and privacy practices; mis/disinformation; other related tech policy. - Investing in Entrepreneurs and Investors: Lack of capital deployed to entrepreneurs and fund managers from historically excluded groups; investment in entrepreneurship support organizations; deployment of venture capital to entrepreneurs and funds. - Responsible AI: Evaluation of responsible AI and tech ethics integration in K-12 education; postsecondary education and alternative pathways readiness towards an AI-enabled workforce; regulation/accountability of tech companies’ AI products and privacy practices; investment in AI-enabled entrepreneurship. Whether they are called librarians, digital stewards, or digital navigators, they perform a wide range of activities like helping people enroll in low-cost broadband plans, making low-cost computers available, providing digital skills training or helping people use digital services like telehealth. If your organization works on these or related issues, please take our survey! The data you provide will help us better understand what you do, and will contribute to a report that will recommend strategies to sustain this work beyond the current Digital Equity Act investment. Please take the time to read my latest essay in Tech Policy Press entitled, "The Public Interest Technology Field Must Embrace Blackness, Faith & Justice to Build a Liberatory Future for All in the Age of AI." I believe a true revolution lies not in AI, but in a deep exploration of faith and justice — inspired by past civil rights movements — to build a technological society that uplifts and honors the richness of Black communities. 💥 Advancing Digital Equity Through Federal Programs and Library Partnerships Webinar 💥 Monday, April 15, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. ET Join national library associations to learn more about how libraries will be leading opportunities created through the Digital Equity Act, which provides $2.75 billion to states through grant programs that promote digital equity and inclusion. The webinar will feature a conversation between The Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) along with public and state library leaders, who will share an update on their collaborations to bridge the digital equity gap. Hear from library leaders involved in NTIA’s Digital Equity Leaders Network, which has developed statewide digital equity plans. These plans are designed to engage an ecosystem of local partners, especially libraries, who are working together to implement new opportunities with funding from the Digital Equity Act. NTIA seeks to expand broadband Internet access and adoption in the U.S., expand the use of spectrum by all users, and ensure that the Internet remains an engine for continued innovation and economic growth.
