On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that all enslaved individuals in rebellious states were to be set free. However, slavery persisted in Texas for an additional two years. In the spring of 1865, General Gordon Granger and Federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the liberation of all slaves. The following year, freed men in Texas organized "Jubilee Day" on June 19th to celebrate their freedom.
