Today, we're debunking common misconceptions surrounding #Veterans with #disabilities! As our Operation Opportunity program continues to offer support to former Veterans transitioning into the civilian workforce, we want to call attention to these myths which can often create barriers along their journey. Let us know what else we should add in the comments below! [ID1: Blue gradient background with a white icon of two people, one in a wheelchair, sitting across from each other at a table. Underneath is the text Common Misconceptions Surrounding Veterans with Disabilities. In the top left is a Disability:IN icon and in the bottom right is an arrow icon. ID2: Blue gradient background behind text Myth: Disabled veterans struggle to adapt to changes. Reality: One of the great strengths acquired that former service people bring to the workforce is adaptability. Disabled veterans bring resilience, problem-solving and a strong work ethic to new and unfamiliar roles. They often excel in roles that involve implementation of new technology or processes. In the top right is text 1/4 and in the bottom right is a white arrow. ID3: Blue gradient background behind text Myth: Disabled veterans have PTSD from combat. Reality: While some veterans who have served in combat may have PTSD, many veterans have not experienced combat, and many combat veterans don’t have PTSD. Further, PTSD is not exclusive to the veteran community. In the top right is text 2/4 and in the bottom right is a white arrow. ID4: Blue gradient background behind text Myth: Military training doesn’t transfer to the civilian workplace. Reality: Many veterans have undergone substantial technical training in fields that directly translate to civilian jobs. Even for those military occupations that don’t have civilian equivalents, there are a wide range of transferrable “soft skills” that are valuable to any role, like attention to detail, the ability to work with others, and eagerness to take initiative. In the top right is text 3/4 and in the bottom right is a white arrow. ID5: Blue gradient background behind text Myth: Veterans with disabilities expect special treatment. Reality: Veterans want the same opportunities to contribute and succeed in the workplace and want to earn achievements based on merit. Like any employee, disabled veterans want to be treated fairly, reasonable accommodations when needed, and a workplace that values them. In the top right is text 4/4 and in the bottom right is a white arrow. ID6: Blue gradient background behind text Let us know what we missed in the comments below! Above is the Disability:IN icon.
