Many employees feel undervalued, which hurts engagement. In hybrid work, showing appreciation is even more critical. When leaders foster a culture of recognition across both remote and in-office teams, engagement and retention thrive. https://ow.ly/Xvr150TER1e

Many leaders mistakenly believe that hybrid and remote work hinder innovation, but research suggests otherwise. Hybrid and virtual teams can actually outperform in-person ones by adopting practices like virtual brainstorming. By embracing these approaches, companies can unlock greater creativity and competitive advantage, regardless of where their teams are located. https://ow.ly/b7Ui50Tzxx8

Lots of Amazon discussion. Some thoughts: Impact: This will lead to a jump in quit rates. This is almost exactly the reverse of the hybrid experiment on Trip published in Nature in June 2024 https://lnkd.in/gQjPAEHD. This moved in the opposite direction – from 5-days to 3-days hybrid – and saw a 35% drop in quit rates. So I guess Amazon quit rates will rise by perhaps 30%. Employees value hybrid at about the same as 8% more pay, so removing hybrid is going to be similar to an 8% pay cut https://lnkd.in/daagPd3U Why: Maybe they find (or believe they find) that fully in person improves productivity. That is not what the research data says in general, e.g. https://lnkd.in/gQjPAEHD, but hard to comment on their analysis without seeing it. Another reason could be a backdoor layoff. In the memo Amazon mentioned they wanted to slim-down managerial numbers to speed up decision making. But the problem with driving quits by ending WFH is often the best employees leave as they have the best outside options. Will other firms follow: Amazon is iconic for the tech sector so other tech firms, including many start-ups will take notice. So, there’s some chance other firms could push for more aggressive return to office policies. However, it is late 2024 and most firms have their own data and experience which is typically more relevant. Amazon does many different things - like the silent memo reading at the start of meetings - that other firms do not copy. The future: I see three scenarios. One is Amazon has a wave of quits rates but powers on through. They will recruit and retain folks that like 5-days in the office. That skews slightly younger, male, less diversity and disability. Second scenario is they change course in the next year or so. Almost 40% of US employees have had 2 or more return to office plans https://lnkd.in/gDFrY-7Z, so it’s quite possible their policy takes another twist, much like their namesake the wiggly Amazon river. Third, they may find the policy is hard to enforce as quit rates surge, and decide it’s not worth enforcing, quietly dropping this in mid-2025. Middle managers are not likely to support this. They are typically in their 30s and 40s, so a very pro-WFH demographic. They also have bonuses based on their team performance (not office swipes) so have no incentive to enforce it. Has work from home ended? No. Big data from SWAA www.wfhresearch.com, Kastle and the US Census HPS shows work from home has been flat since early 2023 (see picture). For every big firm like Amazon pushing for a return to office there are others increasing working from home, often once their office leases expire. We all focus on firms forcing return to offices which is why this seems so common, but many other firms are quietly relaxing this and moving in the opposite direction. I promise to return to this on 17th September 2025, and I suspect by then it will be seen as a "storm in a teacup" as the Brits like to say :-)
