Happy Disability Pride Month! I've openly identified as disabled for the past couple of years, and it's overall changed my life for the better. In claiming my disabled identity, I have... 1. Unpacked innate differences in my cognitive functioning, nervous system, and physical body that are at odds with the way that society is set up. 2. Identified needs, triggers, skills, and supports to improve my daily quality of life and advocate for myself in a variety of contexts. 3. Accepted radical rest into my life to replenish myself after autistic burnout and step out of a toxic cycle of overextending my capacity. 4. Stopped beating myself up for being different, and embraced the ways that my differences inform my perspective of what is meaningful. 5. Allowed myself to grieve the mask I thought I had to wear, and transform into someone who practices self-compassion and self-acceptance. Autistics are frequently Gestalt processors, meaning that we understand information in chunks or whole pieces rather than in parts (think of the difference of learning to read phonetically vs learning the whole word at once). This is why it's harder for autistics to "change gears" or even cope with small plans changing. It's the difference of trying to round an unexpected obstacle with a mountain bike vs a semi-truck. Autistic people need more context, more direct information about the entirety of a process or plan, and for our curious questions not to be met with disdain. This week I'll be posting a series on the topic of Adverse Bias over on the discoHR page. (If you'd like to learn more, it'd be groovy if you gave us a follow!) 🌼 Even the most well-intentioned people are guilty of having adverse unconscious bias. Subconscious messages pop up within a tenth of a second to make a judgment that is the opposite of our conscious belief system. 🌼 Many of us have accepted and understand that even if one is striving to be anti-racist, anti-sexist, and anti-homophobic, there is still unlearning to do on account of the tiny problematic messages we've internalized over our lives. 🌼 One area we've not seen much progress is addressing society's ableism. As an intersectional issue, no minority class is as large, diverse, and unsupported as the disabled. It's time to shift to the paradigm of the future: Neurodiversity and Accessibility.
