D&I Tip of the Day: Most people are uncomfortable with conflict. If conflict arises, it can be tempting to allow emotions to drive the situation because we have not learned to handle it any other way. More likely than not, these feelings will be negative (i.e., anger, fear, frustration, impatience, etc.) and directed towards an out-group (i.e., those who are marginalized). Understandably, there has been alot of focus on unconscious bias training over the last few years. But very little of the training has provided tools for managing confirmation bias, which is "the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms or supports one's prior beliefs or values." This means that sometimes, the conflict can be internal because the information that we are learning clashes with what we already believe or feel. Training should be designed to help people understand the relationship between bias and conflict. Just like there is more than one form of bias, there are multiple types of conflict that could exist: internal (e.g., emotional dissonance); interpersonal (e.g., one-on-one conflict); or inter/intra-group (e.g., complex, human-centered conflict with or within a community). Why is this important? We want employees to challenge their biases in hiring, promotions, problem solving, disciplinary decisions, customer service, DEIA, and more. But first, they must identify what type of conflict they are facing, and then choose how to productively respond to it. This is where skills such as: situational analysis, active listening, perspective shifting, allyship, decision making, and more, become handy. Never forget, training that does not impart skills is simply information.
