When disaster strikes, the health and safety of our students and staff must always come first. The recent fires in Los Angeles sent clouds of smoke and ash across the region, including our client San Gabriel schools. These environmental hazards don’t just linger in the air—they infiltrate buildings, posing risks to indoor air quality and, ultimately, to the well-being of everyone inside. At San Gabriel Unified School District, we took immediate action over the weekend. Recognizing the potential health impact of the smoke and ash, our team worked tirelessly with contractors to inspect and address HVAC systems across our campuses. This effort included replacing filters and thoroughly inspecting ductwork to ensure that the air circulating in our classrooms and offices was clean and safe. A Teachable Moment for All School Districts The steps we took aren’t just about responding to this event—they’re a reminder for all school districts to be proactive: Inspect Your Roofs: Ash and debris can settle on rooftops, creating potential damage or clogging vents. Prompt cleaning and inspections can prevent long-term issues. Evaluate HVAC Systems: Filters can quickly become clogged with ash, reducing air quality and system efficiency. Changing filters and inspecting ducts is crucial to maintaining a healthy environment. Document and Report: Did your district incur costs related to this response?
