Social Marketing for a Better Life

About us

Since 1989, DKT International, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., has been promoting family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention through social marketing in the developing world. Today, DKT International sells products and provides services in nearly 60 countries. We believe that family planning is key to healthier men, women, and communities, but choice is key to empowerment. DKT enables women and men to take control of their reproductive destinies by boosting decision-making power through educational campaigns, increasing family planning product options, and securing products in easy-to-access outlets at affordable prices. Choice is integral to our mission, and innovation is the foundation of our work. With nearly 3,000 employees worldwide, DKT carries out its work through four approaches, each a testament to DKT’s expanding impact and flexibility within changing markets and evolving technologies. 1.) DKT’s classic social marketing model leverages the private sector to distribute products and targets family planning education to every sect of society, from young women to healthcare providers, often the gatekeepers to contraception. 2.) DKT sells products regionally, building brands and transnational trust. 3.) In 2016, DKT acquired WomanCare Global, enhancing our ability to sell high-quality sage abortion products through existing networks. Lastly, 4.) DKT designs online resources to reach people outside our institutional programs. In 2019, DKT delivered more than 47.8 million couple years of protection (CYPs), making DKT one of the largest private providers of family planning in the world. DKT’s sales totals for 2019 included 805 million condoms, 92 million oral contraceptives, 30 million injectables, 3.5 million IUDs, and more than 25 million safe abortion products, like misoprostol and manual vacuum aspiration kits. DKT’s 2019 sales averted 35 thousand maternal deaths, 10 million unsafe abortions, and 7.8 million unintended pregnancies.

Hearing directly from our clients provides a crucial perspective on the people we assist and the difference DKT makes around the world. The experiences of Rosa and Márcia from Mozambique are a strong representation of those who access DKT’s mobile clinics to receive essential sexual and reproductive health services. Their stories are unique, as are the experiences of every client DKT supports, and having the power to choose a modern contraceptive method is at the heart of DKT’s mission. #srh #mozambique DKT Mozambique Aditya Putra Meggie Dumas Christopher Purdy

DKT builds professional capacity globally through comprehensive healthcare provider #trainings, including training soon-to-be doctors, #OBGYNs, and other providers. In Liberia, the Lydia Club prepares new and incoming professional #nurses to administer #familyplanning procedures, offers peer education, and provides career readiness programming. A refresher training for 24 Lydia Club members from three universities in #Liberia was recently held where counseling techniques and a detailed overview of DKT's family planning products were provided. Sarah Browne, a County Community Representative (CCR), shared effective mobilization strategies to enhance participants' abilities in client engagement and care. The training concluded with practical group activities designed to refine peer-to-peer counseling skills and facilitate client referrals to CCRs and the Lydia Call Center. This initiative underscores DKT's dedication to preparing healthcare professionals with the essential tools and knowledge to excel in their careers and make a significant impact in the field of sexual and reproductive health. 🔊 We are proud to share our latest publication, “A Customer’s Journey: Knowledge, Procurement, Use and Likely Future Use of Medication Abortion (MA) in Ghana and Nigeria,” which is now available to read on our website. This study highlights the crucial role of understanding women’s experiences with #medicalabortion (MA) in hopes of improving abortion care in #Ghana and #Nigeria, and throughout the world. Through digital surveys conducted via social media, DKT International partnered with Dr. Sohail Agha and The Behavioral Insights Lab (BiL) to gather data on MA awareness, purchase, and use. Key findings show that awareness of MA is highest amongst women in urban areas and amongst the poorest women, highlighting MA's potential as a "pro-poor" intervention. The study also emphasizes the significant role of private sector outlets like community pharmacies in Ghana and PPMVs in Nigeria for providing access to MA, especially for economically disadvantaged women. 💡 This research sheds light on critical issues, including potential socioeconomic and regional disparities in access and pricing, the importance of MA accessibility for young and poor women, and the need for further research on pricing practices and quality variations. As we continue to advocate for accessible, affordable, and quality abortion care, this study provides a strong foundation for policymakers and healthcare providers to ensure that the needs of women — especially the most vulnerable — are met. 👉 https://lnkd.in/ecvGfHC9 Lester Coutinho DKT Nigeria DKT AWA (Anglophone West Africa)Berenice Alvarez

📢 Our new blog from DKT Pakistan is out now! Read about the 200 new Dhanak Health Care Centers (DHCCs) that will bring healthcare to underserved regions across 20 districts in KPK and Punjab under the Self-Empowerment for Women (SEW) project. Supported by KfW Development Bank and German Cooperation, this expansion builds on a network of 1,500+ clinics, aiming to provide essential, compassionate care in the most remote areas. Key to this initiative is the #collaboration between community managers, #midwives, and local leaders to ensure each clinic is equipped and operational, despite the challenges of regional diversity, land disputes, and security concerns. In the blog you’ll meet community manager Zeeshan, and midwife Tahira, who illustrate the transformative power of #communitydriven healthcare. DHCCs are empowering providers and changing lives, one clinic at a time. https://lnkd.in/eGHTffV6 Hareem S. George Papachristou Mariam Hameedi
