Social Marketing for a Better Life

About us

Since 1989, DKT International, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., has been promoting family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention through social marketing in the developing world. Today, DKT International provides health impact at scale across more than 100 geographies. We believe that family planning is key to healthier men, women, and communities, but choice is key to empowerment. DKT enables women and men to take control of their reproductive destinies by boosting decision-making power through educational campaigns, increasing family planning product options, and securing products in easy-to-access outlets at affordable prices. Choice is integral to our mission, and innovation is the foundation of our work. With nearly 3,000 employees worldwide, DKT carries out its work through four approaches, each a testament to DKT’s expanding impact and flexibility within changing markets and evolving technologies. 1.) DKT’s classic social marketing model leverages the private sector to distribute products and targets family planning education to every sect of society, from young women to healthcare providers, often the gatekeepers to contraception. 2.) DKT sells products regionally, building brands and transnational trust. 3.) In 2016, DKT acquired WomanCare Global, enhancing our ability to sell high-quality sage abortion products through existing networks. Lastly, 4.) DKT designs online resources to reach people outside our institutional programs. In 2023, DKT delivered more than 64.1 million couple years of protection (CYPs), making DKT one of the largest private providers of family planning in the world. DKT’s sales totals for 2023 included 949.6 million condoms, 119.9 million oral contraceptives, 32.95 million injectables, 5.38 million IUDs, and more than 34 million safe abortion products, like misoprostol and MVA kits. DKT’s 2023 sales averted 32,500 maternal deaths, 16.9 million unsafe abortions, and 16.75 million unintended pregnancies.

This week's election in the United States is a pivotal one for our work both domestically and internationally, and although we are not a political or advocacy organization, this is not a time for silence. Rather, we are standing in #solidarity with our partners in the US and abroad as we seek to find a constructive way to ensure that men and women everywhere can maintain agency over their reproductive lives. Our partner, Rutgers - For sexual and reproductive health and rights released the following statement today previewing how the #GlobalGagRule will affect global #srh work in the months and years to come. It's an important read. 👇

🛎 Safeguard women’s health and rights: The global impact of U.S. policy changes    🌍 With Donald Trump’s re-election, millions of women and girls worldwide are waking up to a world where access to safe abortion care could become an even greater challenge, again. Annually, an estimated 25 million unsafe abortions take place, causing thousands of preventable deaths.    Marieke van der Plas, executive director of Rutgers: “Denying people a safe choice is unacceptable, as it leads to life-threatening situations and suffering. Now, more than ever, we must unite to protect and promote the rights, health, and dignity of women and girls globally.”    💗 Join us in solidarity. Together, we can ensure a world where everyone can access the reproductive health care they need, without fear, stigma, or criminalisation.    💡 What does this re-election mean for the future of reproductive health and rights? Read the full article for insights and actions via 👉🏾 https://lnkd.in/enRS5Z56  Reproductive Health Network Kenya | Le Centre ODAS | #RutgersInternational #SheMakesHerSafeChoice #SheDecides #SRHR #ReproductiveRights #TogetherforSRHR #Election2024 #ReproductiveHealth

Voters across party, race, age, and religion have shown that they do not want abortion bans or politicians interfering in personal healthcare decisions. This was proven by the seven state ballot initiatives passed enshrining the right to an abortion in their state constitutions. Despite this, the election results have intensified the threat to abortion access in this country, serving as a stark reminder that the ability for people to choose when, if, and how to grow their families is at risk. Despite the outcome, support for abortion care shaped this election - from the candidates and conversations to the votes cast. More people now understand how deeply connected reproductive choice is to every person’s well-being. At carafem, we are resolute in our commitment to providing safe, high-quality, and compassionate abortion care for those who need it. We stand with the overwhelming majority who support this right and will continue our work to ensure access, no matter the political landscape. carafem is proud to be one of the most nimble, innovative, and respected providers of abortion care in the country. We will continue working to ensure that everyone—regardless of background, location, or income—can access our compassionate, high-quality care. Thank you for standing with us in this fight. Please consider donating to carafem today at www.carafem.org/donate to help protect access and keep our services available to those who need them most. President, DKT International

(A break from US political posts….): Great to be back in the #DRC to see the DKT International team facing so many challenges head on to produce results. Research by colleagues at John Hopkins University suggests that DKT contributes around 35% of #contraceptive prevalence in the country. Always fun to see our wide range of products in #pharmacies, gas stations, and small roadside shops. A major win since my last visit is that DKT has broken an access barrier by bringing medical #abortion into pharmacies. (And a bonus was that we sold 10 boxes of #Emergencycontraception during our visit). We also visited #familyplanning and #maternity clinics (including one run by a church) where DKT has trained providers and ensures that #IUDs, implants, and injectables are affordable. Proud that we have just launched #Avibela, the very first #hormonaliud in the country. At the DKT warehouse, we saw 35,000 doses of our medical #abortion combination packs slated for the Ministry of Health and public sector clinics. We are grateful to the government and many donors and stakeholders for the partnership and support. Much more to accomplish together. #drcongo, #kinshasa #contraception

The journey from the Darien Gap in Panama to the U.S. Southwestern border is fraught with peril, especially for women who face additional risks to their sexual and reproductive wellness and safety. A recent 200% increase in migrant events reported by Mexico in early 2024 highlights the urgency for comprehensive support for these individuals. Amid threats of violence and limited access to healthcare, women migrants endure incredible hardship, often in silence, for fear of deportation. To address this critical issue, DKT Mexico (DKT Latam Norte) has partnered with Parteras Apoyando Migrantes (PAM), a network of midwives providing essential midwifery care to migrant women throughout Mexico. Through this partnership, DKT is supplying DMPA-SC self-injection contraceptives, emergency contraception, and health kits, empowering PAM to support women in need. The self-injection contraceptive offers a discreet, three-month protection against unintended pregnancies, an invaluable resource for those at risk of sexual abuse. By equipping these women with contraceptives and health kits, DKT and PAM are taking vital steps to ensure their safety and health on this treacherous journey. This collaboration marks the beginning of an important initiative, with products set to be distributed by October, providing nine months of contraceptive protection and ongoing support for migrant women. Instead of safeguarding our right to accurate healthcare information, Big Tech is creating unecessary roadblocks for men and women seeking accessible, evidence-based, and scientific resources about reproductive and safe abortion care. The actions of these companies put countless individuals at risk, particularly when it comes to reproductive health. Our affiliate organizations, Women First Digital (WFD) and carafem, navigate censorship from Big Tech everyday. Today, we share the release of "Big Tech Censorship," -- a powerful short film produced in collaboration with Women First Digital (WFD), Women on Web, Plan C Pills, and Repro Uncensored. This film addresses the pressing issue of Big Tech censorship: how major tech companies are suppressing access to vital reproductive health information and services each and every day. Watch the film by clicking on this link- https://lnkd.in/eAqTsY8b , and better understand these critical challenges. Your support is vital in advocating for greater transparency and access to reproductive health information. In the Philippines, "The Trailblazers" are a team of sales representatives who expand access to reproductive health products and education, providing services to remote communities and addressing distribution gaps left by regional distributors to ensure that all points of sale are covered. Their consistent and reliable approach to product delivery reaches untapped and remote areas to expand the availability of DKT brands. They conduct 10 community-focused programs each month aimed at empowering individuals with vital health knowledge, partnering with the Barangay Health Centers to extend their reach into underserved areas and provide meaningful health interventions. In September, they surpassed their revenue targets achieving 144.9% of their target and marking a significant +48% growth over the same period last year. September Highlights: 1️⃣ A family planning lecture in Nueva Vizcaya engaged 75 participants, showcasing DKT brands, providing family planning consultations, and distributing condoms. 2️⃣ An HIV awareness campaign at Camarines State University reached 220 students, emphasizing safe sex practices, early detection, and access to testing clinics. 3️⃣ Connecting with 100 women of reproductive age, offering consultations and strengthening community ties in remote areas. Congratulations to the Trailblazers who are committed to driving positive change. DKT Philippines #FamilyPlanning #SexualHealth #NonProfit #ReproductiveHealth #SRH
