⭐ Spotlight on a 2025 ACEC WA Engineering Excellence Awards State Gold winner! DLR Group your Green Hill School Wellness and Recreation Center for WA Department of Children, Youth, and Families won the top prize in the Social, Economic and Sustainable Design Considerations Category! The original recreation building at Green Hill School in the City Of Chehalis no longer suited the needs of its residents due to safety concerns, poor sightlines, deteriorating materials, and structural issues. The goal was to re-imagine an institutional environment that would have a positive social impact on the youth residing at the state-operated, medium/maximum juvenile facility where residents work to develop new habits and healthy skills. The new Green Hill School Wellness & Recreation Center now serves as the heart of the campus, transforming the overall experience for both youth and staff. The design emphasizes a welcoming, harmonious environment using natural materials. The building’s massing and saw-tooth roofs reflect local architectural styles and landforms, while wood finishes are strategically placed to encourage social interaction. Clerestories and engineered roof trusses maximize natural light and ventilation in the large, open spaces, and resulted in a LEED Gold certification and net-zero energy status. The design emphasizes stormwater management as a key feature, connecting youth and staff to natural ecological systems. The Wellness & Recreation Center stands as a modern, functional, and aesthetically pleasing space, enhancing the campus environment and fostering wellness and connection for students, staff, and visitors alike. Congratulations to the DLR Group, and the children and families of the State of Washington! #InternationalWomensDay: Accelerate Action 134 years: the time it will take to reach gender parity unless we accelerate change. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” is a call to move beyond awareness and drive real progress at every level. Over the past year, 48% of our new hires identify as women, strengthening our integrated #design teams and shaping a more inclusive future in architecture and engineering. Why is this important? Because equity isn’t a finish line that we’ll eventually cross – it’s an ongoing effort of movement. And with each step forward, we build momentum.
