I had the opportunity to make a battle bot last Saturday in a class hosted by David Brunet at Electronic Parts Outlet! The robot that we made was a 150g flipper and the class consisted of me and two other dads with their 7 and 8-year-old sons. We spent the beginning and majority of the time soldering connections to a Malenki Nano that would later be used to control the bot's servos and motors. I learned soldering about a week ago at the Ion Prototyping Lab so that knowledge had especially come in handy to get me quickly finished with assembling the battle bot. I have been particularly interested in the transmitter used to control the battle bot ever since I volunteered at the Robotics@UH Battle Bot Competition as a Safety Officer back in April. So, to finally be able to get my hands on one of them was a thrill! I had really thought that making a battle bot would be a bit more complicated, though it was easier than I expected. By the end of the class, David pulled out the arena for all three of us to compete but I had to promptly run to the Ion for the Houston Robotics Group meet at 2pm. (Though I also did not want to get embarrassingly beat up by the kids if I competed! 💀) Anyway, I look forward to potentially upgrading the flipper in the future or maybe even repurposing the parts for a more lethal build! If I get around to it, I may even participate in a future battle bot competition preferably hosted by Robotics@UH. The class was really fun and it was a joy to see how the dads were helping their sons out with soldering and assembling the flippers while the boys were conversing their excitement with one another about the mere subject of robotics. I ultimately want to thank David for hosting the class! I look forward to the possibility of volunteering for any upcoming classes and events at EPO in the future and additionally encourage anyone interested in robotics and electronics to check them out!
