    The Calisto® N1 is a compact data logger with Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) like capabilities, powered by doblePRIME® software. It provides a built-in web server to manage user access, alert settings, alert management and data visualization. Standard communication protocols include Modbus and DNP3, allowing data to be moved between Calisto N1 and other applications such as SCADA. Integration with other Doble devices that also run doblePRIME application is seamless and easy via a proprietary protocol. It is the perfect match to integrate and manage Calisto H1 Dissolved Gas Analyzer (DGA) monitors.     This week's spotlight falls on Falk Werner as we continue with our series of “Meet the Expert” posts which profile many of Doble Engineering's uniquely gifted and knowledgeable people. Falk studied Electrical Engineering and Information Technology with a focus on Telecommunication and Signal Processing at the University of Stuttgart in Germany, where he obtained the academic degree “Diplom-Ingenieur”. His final thesis focused on Partial Discharge location in power transformers. Falk has in-depth knowledge of partial discharge (PD) diagnostics and measurement methods on high voltage insulation systems. At Doble Lemke in Germany he co-developed the PD solutions range, until joining Doble in the US in 2011. He currently holds the position of Solutions Director for Partial Discharge and EMI at Doble Engineering Company, with previous positions as Solutions Manager, Principal Engineer and Senior Field Engineer, focusing on partial discharge, diagnostics, consulting, and solutions development. In over 15 years of professional experience in the field of PD, he gathered extensive R&D, field testing, consulting, and market experience in over 20 countries. A German native, Falk speaks German, English and “increasingly fading” French. His professional affiliations include IEEE PES Communications and Cybersecurity Committee (PSCC) PES and VDE and he has several publications to his credit. Falk holds a private pilot's license and is an avid sailor engaging in regular one-design and Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) races.     July’s Featured Technical Paper is from the Proceedings of the 2024 International Conference of Doble Clients. SF6 Gas Alternatives, Gas Handling, Mixing and Safety As technology improvements are being introduced, guided by changes to environmental regulations that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, users of Gas Insulated Equipment (GIE) are looking to reduce the dependency of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) in their fleet. In some cases, users are researching how to eliminate the use of SF6 gas for GIE with higher voltage ranges (>245kV, 33kA and/or >63kA). These voltage and current ratings require alternative solutions that provide arc quenching as well as dielectric insulation with efficiency that meets or exceeds the current technology of SF6 gas. New technology such as, C4-Fluoronitrile (C4F7N (here forward referred to as C4F4) is currently the closest technology available that considers footprint, arc quenching and insulation at the higher voltages described above.   Solutions such as synthetic air and natural origin gases (NOG) have also become commercially available as an alternative solution for switchgear up to <145kV 63kA. While there are already commercially available solutions for SF6 gas alternatives, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) are working towards applying their insulating gas technologies for higher voltages. The table below provides a road map of these technologies versus the current CA Air Resources Board & European Union (EU) timeline to ban/reduce SF6 gas.

    Principal Client Services Engineer at Doble Engineering Company

    I was honored to speak to our Summer Interns about Doble and our role in Client Service Engineering helping the electrical industry. The session was attended by over 25 people in the room, and 16 more joined remotely from Canada, Indiana, North Carolina, Maryland, and Texas. During the presentation, I covered various technical topics and provided a brief introduction to the company's history. I highlighted Frank Doble's vision for the organization back in 1920, emphasizing the company's mission of ensuring reliable, safe, and secure energy globally. This mission has remained consistent for over 100 years, focusing on providing advanced diagnostics instruments, engineering expertise, and superior services. To conclude, we demonstrated the use of the Doble Oil Cell to assess oil samples in the field. The audience was surprised by the clear breakdown of the dielectric caused by a small amount of water added into the cell. Sharing knowledge with the next generation was a gratifying experience, and I look forward to the next opportunity! #DobleTested #powertransformers #substations

    We continue our “Meet the Expert” series which profiles many of Doble Engineering's uniquely gifted and knowledgeable people. Today I’d like to talk about Stephan Brauer, PhD. Steve’s first job after graduate school was as a research scientist at a US national laboratory. He worked with many brilliant people developing novel measurement technologies and doing cutting edge science. After a few years he decided to learn about the business world firsthand by creating a startup and taking classes at night. In 2005 he joined Morgan Schaffer to develop technology strategy to grow the instrumentation side of the business. That was his introduction to the electrical power industry, where he has since nurtured many relationships with friends and colleagues from all over the world. The growth of Morgan Schaffer and the Calisto brand led to the acquisition by Doble Engineering in 2017, which is an ongoing success story. Steve’s considerable expertise falls in the areas of condition monitoring of electrical assets, dissolved gas monitoring, technology strategy, best practices for product development and lean manufacturing . In his current role as CTO at Morgan Schaffer, he oversees market and technology strategy for DGA products and also manages applied research and product development. He contributes to standards development for the electrical power industry through his participation in the IEEE PES Transformers Committee, CIGRE and ASTM International.
