The recently released updates to the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) streamlines compliance, allows self-assessment for some requirements, and prioritizes collaboration between the United States Department of Defense and industry to address evolving cybersecurity threats. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) says that applying software updates can reduce the likelihood of a successful attack by as much as 85%, especially when combined with other good cybersecurity practices. Ignoring software updates is a great way to get hacked. These updates fix bugs and patch critical security vulnerabilities that hackers may have already started to exploit. According to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), over 75% of successful cyberattacks exploit vulnerabilities for which patches are available but not applied. Hit the update button, go grab a coffee, and when you get back your data will be more secure. Better yet, follow the advice of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and set software updates to “automatic” to ensure they are always up to date.
