Great to have Eva Douzinas, President of the Rauch Foundation as one of our Global leader interviews on BBC World television discussing fish farming. Over 160 groups from around the World will present an open letter to the UN’s FAO, demanding that carnivorous fish farms be excluded from its definition of ‘sustainable aquaculture’. The move on World Oceans Day, will urge the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to re-evaluate its support of fish farms. Carnivorous fish farms – where the fish are fed fishmeal and fish oil extracted from wild fish, have been criticised for the negative impact they have on the environment. Global returns for aquaproduction, recorded by the FAO, was estimated at 406 billion dollars in 2020. Many thanks to Hannah Kapff and Maddy Lowe from Curious PR for all their help making this happen.

Thanks to the Rauch Foundation for lifting up our work as we fight against the expansion of industrial ag in the United States!
Coming to a coastline near you? As industry gears up to position industrial fish farms in federal water, thank goodness groups like Don't Cage Our Oceans are on the watch. As DCO2's legislative director James Mitchell points out: “We can’t afford to hand over our public spaces to big businesses that will extract profit at the expense of the environment, small business owners, and coastal residents. We need to focus on supporting methods we know are safe, sustainable, and able to feed the American people.” Andrianna Natsoulas

Check out this sneak peek of Casey Willson's (our Communications Coordinator and Researcher) blog from Oceanic Preservation Society "The wonders of our ocean are a source of awe and inspiration, but they also harbor delicate ecosystems and marine mammals that face unprecedented threats. One such threat is Offshore Fish Farming (OFF), the practice of farming fish on an industrial scale, offshore, and far away from the regulatory bodies that provide oversight and public scrutiny. From bottlenose dolphins to critically endangered species like Hawaiian monk seals and North Atlantic Right Whales, marine mammals are at risk due to the detrimental effects of these fish farms. It is important to understand the profound impacts of offshore fish farming on marine mammal populations and advocate for a full ban on these floating factory farms to safeguard our precious ocean residents." 100 degree waters and coral bleaching - let’s NOT make things worse July saw some of the hottest temperatures ever recorded, with a “marine heat wave” in Florida making national headlines by recording ocean water temperatures exceeding 100℉. Climate change - exacerbated by astounding levels of corporate greed - continues to push the Earth’s life support systems and ability to maintain balance to the limits. And often, the ocean bears the brunt of the significant impacts, from acidification, to biodiversity loss, to now, shockingly hot ocean temperatures. This latest ocean warming event caused apocalyptic-levels of coral bleaching in the Florida Keys, to the point where scientists were racing to rescue coral from the ocean to place in controlled lab environments to save some from dying off entirely. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists in charge of coral recovery have referred to it as a “last-ditch form of insurance policy,” and the New York Times article on this mass die-off is filled with quotes from scientists in this field, no strangers to bad news, arriving to even more dire predictions on the fate of coral reefs in the U.S. and worldwide Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gD9Yev_W
