Do you think business is more like a game of chess or poker? Annie Duke does an amazing job in Thinking in Bets to explain the similarities of business and poker, explaining that it is similar to poker due to the lack of control of certain outcomes. With the right mindset, it helps you be process focused instead of only outcome focused. Think about it. In chess, you make a move and know the outcome based on your opponents moves. In poker, there’s a luck component or variable out of your control. Sometimes you make all the right moves in business and get the wrong outcome due to variables out of your control, similar to poker. Sometimes you make the wrong move and it comes out a win. Thinking in Bets is an awesome book that helps teach the process and strategy mindset instead of having an outcome driven only mindset. Highly recommend!
