This sweet memory popped up today. I was preparing for my first job after college as a paralegal at Dovel & Luner LLP. It reminded me of my younger self—ambitious, curious and naive. I am a first-generation professional, so I had no idea what to expect. I brought my MacBook to work because I never used a PC. I wanted to be prepared haha. As I look back at that time, I am so grateful that I was at a place where I was challenged and supported. I worked with brilliant and caring lawyers. I could fail and still have a soft place to land. I could dream big! Most of the lawyers went to Harvard for law school, so I thought could do it too. As a black woman from a working class family, I valued this opportunity. I understood it was a privilege. I also felt like I belonged. It set a strong foundation for my confidence and ability to succeed in the corporate world. I aim to ensure that everyone has this kind of experience in law, regardless of background. A wise person once said that your career makes sense backwards. You can connect the dots in retrospect. It’s true. Furthering DEIB goals in this precarious moment is exactly where I’m supposed to be. Last month, the Dovel & Luner team participated in our annual Firm Day celebration. We enjoyed various activities together on Catalina Island, including kayaking, scuba diving, and parasailing. Our firm encourages opportunities to explore hobbies and try new things together outside of the office. "I thoroughly enjoy seeing my coworkers every day in the office, but firm day is a fun opportunity for added team building and bonding outside of the office,” said Chidimma Alilonu. “I'm glad to work at Dovel, where teamwork and camaraderie comes naturally and where I can learn and grow alongside my team.”

We are excited to welcome Stephen Andrews to Dovel & Luner. Stephen joins the firm after clerking for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and working in big law. Here are some fun facts about Stephen: - Stephen is passionate about helping adopted children and people suffering from a substance-abuse disorder.  - Stephen was a nationally ranked fencer and trained in the pentathlon at the Olympic Training Center. - Before becoming a lawyer, Stephen was an entrepreneur, and he started several small businesses. Here are some fun facts about Martin: - Martin has never had coffee. - Despite never creating anything artistic in his life, Martin has the urge to write the next great novel. - Martin has yet to find a quantity of ice cream that he cannot consume in one serving. Recently, Dovel & Luner secured a settlement in one of our business litigation cases. After defeating Defendant’s summary judgement motion, we obtained justice for our client. New lawsuit against travel insurance company for fraud and bad faith. Our clients purchased travel insurance from Allianz before traveling to South Africa. Allianz promised that if the clients had a medical emergency, Allianz had a medical team available 24/7 who would consult with local doctors, identify high quality doctors and hospitals in the region, arrange for medical transport to a suitable facility, and provide the upfront payment that doctors require before performing surgery. While traveling, the clients were violently hijacked and robbed, and suffered serious injuries, requiring immediate surgery. As alleged in the attached complaint, despite repeated calls to Allianz for assistance, Allianz provided nothing: no medical team, no consultation, no recommendations, no transport, and no upfront payment. We are looking forward to litigating this case and holding the responsible parties accountable. We often take referrals and partner with other firms on cases.
