  • "I believe the responsibility for tomorrow is in our hands today. I believe that each of us highly favored must prepare for those who are least favored. Finally, I believe that education and only education is the key that can open the dungeon of ignorance which imprisons our youth and prohibits them from sharing in the glory of a good life, lived joyously." - Dr. Maya Angelou Today we join thousands of nonprofit organizations worldwide in a day dedicated to giving and human connectivity, #GivingTuesday   Guided by Dr. Maya Angelou’s vision of “…sharing in the glory of a good life, lived joyously”, the mission of the Dr. Maya Angelou Foundation is to activate positive change and inspire the next generation of critical thinkers, creative writers and courageous leaders through our innovative programs rooted in greater access to education, equality, and justice for all.   We fulfill our mission by awarding deserving students scholarships to attend historically black colleges and universities through our flagship Annie Willie Scholarship, strengthen student outcomes in literacy- and writing-based curriculum through our Dr. Maya Angelou Foundation Essay Contest, and by supporting healthcare and community-based initiatives bearing Dr. Angelou’s name. There are so many ways to take action and express gratitude today and every day. Around the world, people are taking action to drive generosity, exercise kindness and give thanks.   To learn more visit us at: https://lnkd.in/g8ip_D5S   To make a gift to support our work visit: https://lnkd.in/dkZqpiDH

  • "If you're going to live, leave a legacy. Make a mark on the world that can't be erased." -Dr. Maya Angelou Today, we uplift the life, servant leadership, and legacy of Sheila Jackson Lee. She was a courageous leader, longtime Texas congresswoman, and champion of equality for all people. We extend our condolences and thoughts of comfort and strength to Congresswoman Lee's family. - The Dr. Maya Angelou Foundation https://lnkd.in/gYjfyWED When Great Trees Fall When great trees fall, rocks on distant hills shudder, lions hunker down in tall grasses, and even elephants lumber after safety. When great trees fall in forests, small things recoil into silence, their senses eroded beyond fear. When great souls die, the air around us becomes light, rare, sterile. We breathe, briefly. Our eyes, briefly, see with a hurtful clarity. Our memory, suddenly sharpened, examines, gnaws on kind words unsaid, promised walks never taken. Great souls die and our reality, bound to them, takes leave of us. Our souls, dependent upon their nurture, now shrink, wizened. Our minds, formed and informed by their radiance,
fall away. We are not so much maddened as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold caves. And when great souls die, after a period peace blooms, slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration. Our senses, restored, never to be the same, whisper to us. They existed. They existed. We can be. Be and be better. For they existed. ― Dr. Maya Angelou
