Leveraging the real estate industry and multi-family apartment property owners and operators, Entryway, a DRK portfolio organization, is transitioning individuals and their families out of situational homelessness into meaningful lives. In addition to supporting each participant with affordable, furnished housing, Entryway provides career mentoring, technical training, financial literacy, and access to services to ensure a successful long-term transition into economic self-sufficiency. Entryway currently serves more than 1,600 people in 14 U.S. cities and will expand to serve 40,000 beneficiaries in the next five years. StrongMinds, a DRK Foundation portfolio organization, treats women and adolescents with depression in low-income, sub-Saharan African communities. Leveraging group interpersonal therapy, StrongMinds has provided treatment to over 600,000 individuals, with 80% of their patients remaining depression-free six months after therapy. Because of their proven impact, StrongMinds is expanding to the United States and recently launched in New Jersey to address the growing youth mental health crisis. Catalyzed by a grant from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, StrongMinds America is providing mental health screenings, workshops, presentations, and resources to youth in under-resourced communities to help them identify signs and symptoms of mental health concerns. So far, in 2024, StrongMinds America has connected 500 youth in New Jersey to mental health support. Their long-term goal is to fundamentally increase access to mental health services in all 50 states.  “This grant from Horizon has enabled StrongMinds America to challenge stigma and misconceptions about mental health that keep people from reengaging with services they need. Our goal has always been to remove barriers to care in communities we serve, and this funding is crucial in achieving this goal,” says Sean Mayberry, founder and CEO of StrongMinds, about their recent support. First Place for Youth, a DRK Foundation portfolio organization, provides youth aging out of the foster care system with stable housing and support so they can successfully transition into self-sufficiency and responsible adulthood. To date, First Place for Youth has provided housing and intensive case management to over 3,500 youth, and this week they expanded, and opened a free housing complex on Pasadena City College’s campus, reserved for students transitioning out of the foster care system in need of a next step. “What we've done collectively is put all of our resources together, set aside our egos, and said, 'Let's make more housing for foster youth so they not only have stability, but the opportunity to learn, grow, and go to college,” said Thomas G. Lee, CEO of First Place for Youth. "It took a burden off of my shoulders. It's a lot more doable to be successful in school when you don't have to worry about where you’re going to sleep at night, and you don't have to worry about how you're going to pay bills,” says Myh'Keith, a First Place for Youth resident at Pasadena City College. Founded on the belief that the arts drive strong, vibrant, diverse communities, Community Arts Stabilization Trust (CAST) creates permanent, affordable space for artists, creatives, and cultural organizations in the Bay Area. Since 2013, CAST has acquired and developed nearly 103,000 sq ft of space for arts and community groups, and now, in their second decade, they are increasing their scale across San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose, with affordable artist housing and large-scale arts centers. In a world with seemingly endless challenges, it’s often hard to see the good that is taking place. At DRK, we see it every day through the work our portfolio organizations are doing to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of millions of people. This includes SaveLIFE Foundation (SLF), an independent, specialist non-profit organization saving lives on roads in India and beyond. They have facilitated the enactment of key legislation in India, including a Good Samaritan Law, and adopted 100 of India’s deadliest highways to build “zero-fatality” corridors. Building on policy successes of recent years, SLF is scaling to create a blueprint to encode road safety best practices at state and union levels, including guaranteeing the right to emergency care in law.
