Researchers should be a little uptight about presenting their own work, instead of letting stakeholders present research findings to their teams themselves. 'Cause the moment a senior leader, IT partner, or other members of an org have questions, delegates may be unable to answer adequately. Or worse, they may unintentionally paint an inaccurate picture of what the research uncovered. Or worse YET, they may frame findings in a way that matches their own agenda. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬: ▶️ Popping in for 10 mins during another department’s staff meeting to share a one-pager on key takeaways from a recent study. ▶️ Asking your boss to sit in on that executive meeting to present the findings yourself, or at the very least to be there when any detailed questions arise. ▶️ YOU sending that email over someone else because it’s in relation to your own research. ▶️ Stepping up to create those few key takeaway slides within the larger design strategy or product roadmap deck—instead of having others to create it for you. ▶️ Requesting to be included on emails in order to provide your direct POV on an insight or design direction related to your research. By taking ownership of your work through representing it yourself, you’ll not only be more visible within the organization but you’ll convey the whole truth. Even if it's unpopular.

    Director, Insights

Last week, I had the opportunity to present at Dscout's Co-Lab, an in-person conference for product, design, and research leaders. While I learned a ton and met some incredible people, what stood out most was the leadership. It's important to acknowledge servant leadership—a concept we talk about often but rarely witness. I saw leaders whose strength lies in their humility and thoughtfulness, with innovation driven by inspired team members and a genuine culture of caring. But then again, I really shouldn’t be surprised—it is a research company, after all. Thanks again for hosting Julie Marie Norvaisas Michael Winnick Bridget Bidlack Julee Held

You're gonna make mistakes as a user researcher. You might: • Ask leading questions during an interview • CC 100+ users in an email rather than BCC'ing them • Recruit the wrong participants • Go into sessions with the wrong prototype • Invite the wrong colleagues to a workshop • Completely butcher interviews in front of the C-suite and executives It's less about if these things might happen, but when. AND how you learn from them after the fact to make your future practice even better. Here's a Friday pep talk to remind you that you're gonna be just fine 👉 https://bit.ly/4eiiiX9

Seemingly minor mishaps in your usability testing prep can cause major hold-ups. Copy and paste this checklist of things you should be doing 1-2 days BEFORE your test for smoother sailing: ☑️ If relevant, send out confirmation emails to participants ☑️ Get passwords or enable access to the prototype ☑️ Do a dry run of the test ☑️ Set up, send out, or print the NDA and/or consent form ☑️ Make sure incentives are ready (e.g., order gift cards, create discount codes) ☑️ Double-check the calendar invites for necessary info and to make sure all links work ☑️ Practice how you'll greet the participant For more before, during, and after usability test todos, bookmark this resource 👉 https://bit.ly/3XWEKzw

It’s been a week since dscout Co-Lab 2024 and I’m still feeling energized by connecting with and learning from fellow People Nerds. It was an event full of informative lightning talks on topics like making a business impact through research, lively dinner conversations, and meeting brilliant research leaders. Looking forward to keeping the momentum with Co-Lab continued!
