International President Elsie Cooke-Holmes released the following statement regarding the recent S.B.1 Decision: “U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez’s decision in our legal challenge against Texas Senate Bill 1 marks a pivotal moment in our fight for an inclusive democracy. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, with our 111-year legacy of championing voting rights and social justice, celebrates this ruling that affirms the importance of equal access to the ballot box. The court decisively ruled that the provisions of S.B. 1 restricting voting assistance violate Section 208 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, ensuring that individuals who provide lawful assistance to voters with low literacy skills or disabilities can no longer face criminal prosecution and civil penalties. This outcome is a significant win for voters who rely on assistance to cast their ballots, safeguarding their rights and ensuring they can vote without fear of legal consequences. We proudly stand with our co-plaintiffs and the millions of Texans who fought against this restrictive law. While we celebrate this hard-earned victory for Texas voters and the organizations that support them, we recognize that the decision came too late to impact the current election. Our work continues. We are committed to advancing a robust advocacy agenda that includes state and federal strategies to protect voting rights. The absence of comprehensive federal legislation places us in a constant defensive posture, underscoring the urgent need for laws like the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom to Vote Act to enact the reforms our democracy needs. We will remain steadfast in our mission to ensure all voters, regardless of background or ability, have full and equal access to the ballot.” #DST1913 #FortitudeOnTheFrontline #EmpoweringOurCommunities

Congresswoman Lucy McBath has made significant strides in student safety with the recent House passage of the Bipartisan Stop Campus Hazing Act (H.R. 5646). Partnering with colleagues from both parties, this legislation tackles the tragic issue of hazing on college campuses, enhancing transparency and reporting standards. Drawing from her personal experiences, McBath emphasizes the need to protect students and honor the memories of hazing victims. Her leadership exemplifies a commitment to reform, empowering families to make informed choices and ensuring the well-being of students nationwide. Congratulations Soror McBath! Congresswoman McBath was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta in the Spring of 1980 at the Alpha Eta Chapter (Virginia State University) and is currently a member of the Marietta-Roswell Alumnae Chapter. #DST1913 #EngagingOurSisterhood
