The April 15 U.S tax filing deadline is only five days away. (If you file for an extension, the deadline is October 15, 2024.) Here are a few helpful reminders from Dubrey, Culliton & Associates about tax filing: · The penalty for filing late if you owe taxes is 5% of the balance due per month up to 25%   · Filing for an extension is not an extension to pay. If you have a balance due, you must submit an estimated tax due by April 15 to avoid a penalty. · There is no penalty for late filing if you are owed a refund or if you are living outside the country while serving in the military or in a federally declared disaster area. · The statute of limitations to collect your refund is three years from the original due date. After three years, you forfeit your refund, so be sure to follow up!

The IRS has released higher federal tax brackets for 2024 to adjust for inflation. The standard deduction is increasing to $29,200 for married couples filing together and $14,600 for single taxpayers. There are also changes to the alternative minimum tax, estate tax exemption, earned income tax credit and flexible spending account limits, among others.
