  • This morning I realized that I had lost my wallet. It happened while running like a lunatic through a massive thunderstorm after dinner with friends. After getting angry at the situation, I quickly locked all the credit cards and asked for replacements. Then came the task I most dreaded. Going to the Minnesota DMV for a replacement license. When I arrived they said that it would be a 1 to 2 hour wait. I sighed but resigned myself to the fact I was also going to lose 1 to 2 hours of my time. After a short time, 2 women asked if they could sit in the seats next to me. They were from out of town and discussing restaurants. I suggested one that I know pretty well (and my daughter just started working there). They thanked me as they left. I also saw a beautiful 2 month old baby and spoke with her mother. I saw a DMV worker help a non-english speaking man. I saw a young couple apply for a wedding license. I say a young man getting his driver's license. And then my number was finally called. When I left, I really didn't feel like I had lost something. I felt that I had shared some very important moments in other people's lives. I felt that I had actually gained something. So, in those moments of loss that we all have, ask yourself... What did I gain? #marketingrecruiter #medtechrecruiter #hightechrecruiter #salesrecruiter

  • Response Bias occurs when someone is asked a question in which the response may reflect poorly on the respondant's behaviors, thoughts and/or feelings. One example would be when your doctor asks you about your diet or alcohol consumption. Of course we all eat healthy and never more than a drink per day. Right? Another example is when asked about brand preferences. Say you were asked about your choice of beer. You may really enjoy a the taste of certain brand but because of its affiliation with various causes, you state a completely different brand. Response Bias is precisely what makes surveys and polls so difficult. The difference between stated and actual behaviors can lead to really skewed results. The same is true in employee surveys. If employees believe that their responses will somehow be traced back to them, they will only offer the responses that are deemed acceptable by senior leadership. And believe it or not, most employees do not believe assurances that their responses are completely anonymous. As a result, we all need to reasonably question the accuracy of polls and surveys. We should ask if the results really accurately reflect what is happening. Or are we being told what the respondant thinks we want to hear. #marketingrecruiter #hightechrecruiter #medtechrecruiter #salesrecruiter

  • Due North has been chosen as a Top Voice on LinkedIn! Ok, I realize that the video is a bit cheesy but as it was Sunday afternoon, I thought I would have a little fun with it. Being recognized for the content we create means a lot to a classically trained marketer turned recruiter. We try to share insights that are different than the common orthodoxy about what is happening in the talent market, economy and beyond. Why do we do it? The average person spend 90,000 hours at work during their life. That's over 10 years of one's life! More if you consider only waking hours. Our careers aren't just what we "do" from day to day. They are an extension of our very being. That's why many people say "I put my heart into it" when they really care about an accomplishment. So as long as the LinkedIn community continues to like our content for helping inform them, we will continue to produce it. Oh, and seriously, hit the "like" button! #medtechrecruiter #hightechrecruiter #marketingrecruiter #salesrecruiter

  • As you prepare for your weekend after what has hopefully been a productive week. I encourage you to do yourself a favor and write down 3 things that you did really well this week. These should be top of mind and should just flow from your stream of consciousness. And they do not need to be huge accomplishments. Perhaps you made a really good cup of coffee Perhaps you made a keen observation in a meeting Perhaps you did a great job recognizing the efforts of your team Or maybe you were just kind to some random stranger. Now write these "wins" down and first thing Monday morning, read them to yourself. I promise you. You will raise your vibration and enter into the week feeling better and ready to build out 3 new successes to write down at the end of the week. Now have a wonderful weekend! #medtechrecruiter #hightechrecruiter #marketingrecruiter #salesrecruiter

  • Does your organization suffer from the Mandela effect? The Mandela effect is when a large gropup of people remember something different than how it occurred in reality. It origin was that a large number of people incorrectly remembered as dying in prison in the 1980's, when he actually died in 2013. In many companies, there are pet projects that are viewed as tremendous successes but are revealed as failures in reality. Sometimes it's a newly launched product that contains amazing new technology which was developed after much time and expense. However, when the product is actually in market the company finds there is no market for it. Other times, it is the sales team that celebrates the gain of a large customer. Later it is revealed that the company loses money on the customer. Usually, it is someone new to the organization that reveals the truth. Because they were not part of the origin story of the myth, they often are the ones who look at the situation objectively and challenge the commonly held beliefs. So listen to those who are new to your organization when they point to things that they say appear incorrect or ask you to explain why something is the way it is. While sometimes the truth does indeed hurt, it will hurt your career more to not listen to them. #marketingrecruiting #salesrecruiting #medtechrecruiter #hightechrecruiter

  • "There's no shortage of labor. I get tons of applicants from my postings." This is a quote from a talent acquisition leader with whom I recently spoke. I then asked why so many of her positions had been open for an extended period. She said "My hiring managers are just too picky. They want the right experience, education and cultural fit." I then asked why she thought that was the case. She said "Oh, their just worried about having to train." I said maybe they are concerned about how the person will perform and how it will reflect on them. She said "We still are going to stick with posting for now." Believe it or not, these are actual conversations that are happening every day. And when the labor force in the US continues to shrink due to 10,000 boomers retiring each day, shrinking international migration and other issues, these companies are putting themselves at huge disadvantage. If they aren't filling roles, the work either isn't getting done or isn't getting done well. If they are filling roles, they aren't getting the best talent. And this might actually be far worse as even little mistakes can be very costly. Remember Crowdstrike's botched software update? I'm not certain which senario is worse but both are bad. Now clearly there are entry level roles for which posting is completely appropriate. That said, for managerial and highly skilled roles does it make sense to either not fill the role or fill it with less qualified people? The Chamber of Commerce recently published a report on the labor force shortage. It is a must read for anyone with interest in the US talent market. https://lnkd.in/gy2e43bh #marketingrecruiter #salesrecruiter #medtechrecruiting #hightechrecruiting

  • RECESSION!!!! For a few years, most of the economic pundits have been proclaiming that a recession was just around the corner. Inflation was out of control due to many factors. So, of course the Fed would raise interest rates to coool it. Most were sure that this would lead to recession. As I said multiple times, a recession wasn't coming. Why? Wages were rising quickly as the supply of talent wasn't matching demand. And with about 10,000 boomers retiring each day, there still aren't enough people to fill all the available roles. Supply chain issues were fixed. And with manufacturing jobs growing in the US as companies "re-shore" to avoid supply chain risks exposed by the pandemic. Pricing actions by companies and retailers have slowed and in some cases reversed. And now inflation has cooled to to 2.9% which is close to the target rate of 2%. Now economists are saying the soft landing is coming as inflation subsides and the Fed lowers rates. And Goldman Sachs is predicting strong growth in 2025. Is your company planning for growth in 2025? #medtechrecruiter #hightechrecruiter #marketingrecruiter #salesrecruiting

  • Long ago, I lived in an apartment complex that had wood burning fireplaces. Someone cleaned out their fireplace ashes and accidentally causing a fire in the dumpster. It was fairly quickly handled by the fire department. However, everyone had to leave the building during a very cold evening. And no one was happy about it. Everyone wanted to know who did it! So what was intended to be a positive thing (cleaning one's fireplace), turned out to be the thing angering all of the neighbors. If only the person had inspected their ashes, they would never had a problem. The same thing happens in corporate america where someone doesn't do their due diligence prior to a decision. They cause a dumpster fire. And if this person works for you, you're going to get burned as well. Don't get burned, contact Due North for top talent that not only doesn't cause fires, but puts them out as well! #marketingrecruiter #salesrecruiting #medtechrecruiting #hightechrecruiting
