With the holiday season approaching, shoppers are expected to spend 31.7% more on gifts, food, décor and experiences than they did in the previous year. The average shopper is expected to spend $1,261, about $300 more than last year. This increase is due to easing economic constraints that have affected shoppers in past years. Shoppers are also expected to spend 56% more on holiday experiences and shows than they have in the past. Social media marketing has played a role in this increase as well, with more than 80% of consumers saying they will use Facebook, Instagram and TikTok to help them shop. The pre-leasing season for the 2024-25 school year has officially wrapped up. At Yardi 200 schools, the pre-lease rate reached 92.9% in August, 20 basis points above August 2023. This season saw exceptionally strong growth at the beginning and tapered off in the spring, sometimes dropping below 2023 numbers. A handful of universities were over 99% pre-leased at the end of August, including Oklahoma State, Ohio, Oregon State, VCU, Auburn and Illinois State. Walmart makes history with a move that could send waves through the commercial real estate developer community. Walmart Inc., who partnered with Alquist 3D on the first-of-its kind development project, used 3D printing to construct a new addition to their store in Athens, TN. The addition, measuring 8,000 SF with 20-foot-high ceilings, is one of the largest free standing 3D-printed structures in the United States. The project also helps Walmart in continuing their goal to become more environmentally friendly year-over-year. While there is still plenty to work out in regards to scaling this nationally, Walmart has already stated they plan to construct a second facility in the near future. It is important to students that their housing is pedestrian to campus. For 2025, Niche ranks Harvey Mudd College, a small private college in the greater Los Angeles area, the number one Best Value College in America. For this study, the two factors with the most weight were average return on investment by 30 and the economic mobility index. Also considered were the average net price, graduation rate, loan default rate, median earnings one year after graduation, and median earnings six years after graduation.
