Duolingo is the world's most popular way to learn a language.
About us
Our mission is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. Duolingo is the most downloaded education app in the history of the App Store and in 2019 became the top-grossing education app worldwide. We set out to do something altogether different in the learning space. Learning a new language is hard; we believe it should be fun. We use bite-sized lessons that feel like playing a game to keep our learners motivated. Learning a new language can also be expensive, and because we believe it should be free, we made it so. Duolingo has been named to: BuiltIn's Best Places to Work (2023), Fast Company Best Workplaces for Innovators (2022), Fast Company 10 Most Innovative Education Company (2022), among others.

I'm a big fan of #TheBear — such a fan that I asked all of our employees to watch the "Forks" episode last year. To me, it's a show about striving for excellence, which is a core operating principle at Duolingo. (And for what it's worth, I try to be a Sydney and not a Carmy. He's a little too chaotic.) More on that here: https://lnkd.in/e46ai3FS #thebears3

Last year our Sustainability Club was looking for ways to reduce Duolingo's carbon footprint. This year, we offered chartered buses from the NYC office to the Pittsburgh office for those who wanted to carpool to HQ instead of flying. How did this happen? After establishing interest amongst employees, it was really just a couple conversations between the Sustainability Club and our Workplace Team. They worked out logistics and divided up important responsibilities -- RSVPS, bus captains, who's bringing which road trip snacks (VERY key) -- to offer a more sustainable option for NY-based employees traveling to Pittsburgh. And nobody had to empty out their water bottle! #onlyatduolingo #sustainability

We give our Pittsburgh employees $10K when they buy their first home in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh played a really big role in making our company and founders who they are today. Because of that, Luis von Ahn and Severin Hacker have been very intentional about giving back to the city that raised them and Duolingo. That’s why we have this mortgage benefit for our Pittsburgh-based employees. We don’t want to turn Pittsburgh into a renters’ market. We want to invest in and give back to our community. When we saw how much our employees utilized this benefit, we increased the benefit from $2K to $5K to what it is now: $10K! So employees like Mert can commit to Pittsburgh the way we have. #onlyatduolingo
