Why is Duo the Owl 🟢 green 🟢? There's a very, VERY ingenious 🤯 reason for that. Severin Hacker, our CTO and Co-founder, explains the story behind the literal face of our app, our mascot, Duo, and how our iconic green branding came to be. #duolingo #onlyatduolingo

Duolingo is the world's most popular way to learn a language.
About us
Our mission is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. Duolingo is the most downloaded education app in the history of the App Store and in 2019 became the top-grossing education app worldwide. We set out to do something altogether different in the learning space. Learning a new language is hard; we believe it should be fun. We use bite-sized lessons that feel like playing a game to keep our learners motivated. Learning a new language can also be expensive, and because we believe it should be free, we made it so. Duolingo has been named to: BuiltIn's Best Places to Work (2023), Fast Company Best Workplaces for Innovators (2022), Fast Company 10 Most Innovative Education Company (2022), among others.

There’s a fine line between a numerator and a denominator. Only a fraction of people will get that joke. You might be one of them if you're doing our new Math course! Last year, Duolingo launched our Math course to expand our mission beyond Language. Some people are dedicated to their streak. And then there are people who are 𝘥𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 to their streak. 🔥 Shoutout to Kento Okamoto for his amazing Duo artwork he created by going on a 14.4 mile, zigzaggy run to celebrate his 1,000 day streak. 👏 Want to work on a product that people are obsessed with? https://lnkd.in/gfZjqudW #duolingo #onlyatduolingo

Making learning fun is a core tenet of our Product team. We aren’t just competing with other learning apps; we’re competing with anything users do to fill their free time, like gaming. This is why we launched a new feature called Adventures, a video game-like experience in your Duolingo path. 🎮 Here are three learnings from video games that Jason Goettisheim, our Principal Product Manager, applied to building Adventures: 🌎 Build new environments: Games encourage play, curiosity, and immersive world-building through new environments. New environments allow you to learn while exploring — just like in real life. In Adventures, you can take the time to tap around the world to find hidden objects or click on an object to learn its meaning in your target language. 👾 Expand on your characters: The most compelling games also craft memorable characters. Our Duolingo characters have been featured throughout the app, and Adventures is the first time we’ve able to show off their full personalities. This was to make gameplay more fun. For example, we created storylines focused on Junior misplacing his pet frog, Sugar, Vikram exploring his love of baking, and Oscar putting his art knowledge to the test to find the owner of a missing vase. 🧠 Create stickiness through exploration: Unlike our traditional lessons, where there’s usually just one right answer, Adventures was designed to be more open-ended. You can tap on any character, and if they can’t help you with your next task, they’ll use your target language to guide you towards your next step. By allowing you to “choose their own adventure”, you’ll explore what seems most fun and exciting to you, spending more time within the experience, which helps make learning more memorable. “It’s so rare for PMs to get such a creative 0 -> 1 opportunity. This doesn’t mean just working with UX designers, but also with animators, visual artists, and even creative writers.” We’re looking for gamification Product Managers. Check this link or share it with a friend: https://lnkd.in/eefqnB_M #duolingo #productmanagement Currently, Adventures are available in our English for Spanish speakers and French for English speakers courses, and will be coming to more courses soon.

We love math and we love hiking, so we combined our loves and went on the nerdiest hike ever. 🤓 🥾 Have you ever heard of an Eulerian Circuit? Euler invented graph theory to prove it is impossible to walk through the city of Königsberg by crossing each bridge exactly once. However, it turns out that in #Pittsburgh, it is possible to devise a walk that crosses every river bridge exactly once! 🌉 Our Chief Engineering Officer Natalie Glance, and a few other Duos (employees), started an annual Eulerian Circuit Hike in 2018 that crosses 4 landmasses, 17 bridges, and about 20 miles. 👏 Jason Xia, one of our software engineers, shared that “one of the reasons I love working in Duolingo’s Pittsburgh office is because a lot of Duos who move to Pittsburgh don’t know anyone here yet, so they’re super open to making friends at work! We also have a lot of clubs that allow Duos to bond over shared hobbies (e.g., Club Hiking, which organized this event). This hike is a great way to get to know other Duos better, since we spend the entire day together (~7.5 hours!) seeing some of the best views that Pittsburgh has to offer! 🙋♂️ Want to join our hike next year? We are hiring engineers in Pittsburgh! Link here: https://lnkd.in/eSQGSi6y #duolingo #onlyatduolingo #engineering
